My wife lost a key set (a house key, car key, and a key-less entry for her car). She thinks she might have lost it in or around Wallingford Park, probably around the end of January.

If anyone has come across them, please call me at: 206-617-3458

Clearly I am in the minority here, but I choose to do all sorts of things in an urban environment that are unconventional and put all the rules and regulations and government on it you want. I will still grow as much of my own produce as I can, I will keep bees and chickens, and I won't leash my dog in a park.

The 5 minutes of joy my dog gets running for a ball at the park bfore he tired out won't b taken away by someone yelling at me or even writing me a ticket, that is the price of freedom.

Come grab them from our front yard - Free artificial Christmas tree - note that this one has to be assembled. All parts are in a giant rubbermaid tub worth taking all by itself. (You gotta take the tree, too.) Just match the letters and voila! Tree.

Also, old-school, metal (heavy) three drawer file cabinet. Very sturdy, free to good home.

Both available at: 4521 1st Ave NE - if you don't see them out front, they're gone!

Based on 23 years living near the park and 12 years running volunteer maintenance projects there, I am very comfortable saying that from November to April the NUMBER ONE source of wear on the field is due to owners running their dogs off-leash. The field is posted as closed and MOST ultimate and soccer folks respect that.

The turf is very soft in the winter and easily damaged. Once damaged, the grass will not grow back unless it is reseeded, which costs $$ that Parks does not have and cannot be done until late in the Spring. Growth takes many weeks, if not months to get strong enough to hold up to use. The net effect is that opening of the field is delayed (like last year) or the field degrades more each year until it becomes a mud pit and not much use to anyone.

Looking at the field today, one could hardly tell that it was COMPLETELY replaced only 9 years ago. Parks considers use of the field when it is posted closed as trespassing and recommends calling the police, like anyone would do that.

Wallingford Playfield is a great resource and is heavily used by a variety of users. Please, ALL users should respect the signs and refrain from using the field in the winter and early spring. There is an off-leash area at Lower Woodland Park and others throughout the city.

I recall the campaign to establish those areas nearly 20 years ago - Owners pledged then that if off-leash areas were provided, owners would no longer use other parks for off-leash activity. It was also estimated that less than 1/3 of all dogs in the city are licensed.

http://www.challengemultisport.com

This is my favorite secret of the year. Any folks who are getting in shape or are competitive athletes, listen up.

Challenge Multisport is a new training center just opening up on 50th, across from the Woodland Park tennis courts. It caters to competition triathletes and couch potatoes (like me) alike. Nadine, one of the founders, has trained with Olympic coaches, and is one of only three Level 2 USA cycling coaches in Seattle. Challenge Multisport has brand-new Computrainers, weights, and new flat panels (though I confess, I didn't know what a Computrainer was until she put me and my bike on one.)

The experience I've had here is highly personal and extremely motivational. I'm not a pro athlete, I'm a recovering couch potato, and I need different training than a pro athlete gets. Yet there are several triathletes preparing for a major race, getting their own training. That's why I'm writing this review. I'm truly excited about Challenge Multisport.

You can get a free introductory class if you sign up online. I don't know how long this offer will last, but to get it, just;

-go to http://www.challengemultisport.com
-click on "CLASSES" (The link will take you to a scheduling site.)
-Choose the class you want
-Choose "introductory class" under "indoor cycling" from the drop down menu.
Once you've signed up, you'll get a confirmation email with the date, time, address, contact and class information. Oh, and by the way, for more free classes, ask about referring a friend, and bring your friends. In the meantime, tell Nadine that Jonk sent you! :^)

One caveat; the center and the website are not completely finished. Nadine had an incident with a ladder and the ladder won, but I've seen a lot of progress between classes. She's healing fast and will be back up to speed soon.

Hope to see you there!

Jonk

At least one area resident owns a .45 semi-automatic. The area needs "panhandler guidelines" to that businesses can operate without customers being pestered. Whsat do these people do when they aren't begging? Looking for hockable property that's left out to support alcohol/drug habits. They should not be allowed within 25 ft of any open business or it's parking lot.

I for one am glad to see the liquor store gone. Has anyone noticed the decrease in signers since it's been gone? Although I did see Big Greg back at the west side of QFC. He used to claim to be a "Viet Nam vet" on his sign and he's younger than me. (55) Do not support his street lifestyle and perhaps he will return to sobriety.

I don't think that dogs cause more damage to the playfields, but they /do/ cause harm to the perception of dog owners within the community. You know you're breaking the law - are we all allowed to pick and chose the laws we obey? I have one of the most sociable dogs I've ever worked with, yet I still avoid people who have their dogs off-leash in areas they're not supposed to be. What OTHER things about your animal's care and safety are you choosing to ignore? Is your pet spayed or neutered appropriately? Socialized well? Proper vaccinations and medical care? Those are all pretty inconvenient, did you decide to ignore those duties of pet ownership, too?

I love dogs as much or more than anyone. I spent my childhood raising and training dogs as working animals and pets. I chose to not have a dog when I moved to Seattle, because my lifestyle and situation didn't allow for the type of dog I wanted to have (a large working breed retriever.) When I chose to bring a Lab Retriever into my life, I knew that I was going to have to make some sacrifices to accomodate a large breed dog in an urban environment - frequent long, rambling walks, doggie daycare, and multiple treks to a dog park for exercise. Its often a headache and often QUITE inconvenient, but I chose to have a large breed dog in an urban setting; the inconveniences are by choice, not some over-reaching government plot to stop me from enjoying a good flyball session with my pooch! I know its not popular to say, but there it is - if you find that you can't properly care for the needs of an animal, then maybe you should rethink having one.

@ robba, the parks are to be enjoyed by everyone in their own way. Dog owners pay taxes that go to maintain the parks too. I have a child and dogs and am more concerned with finding needles and other drug paraphernalia in the park then dog poo. I think if there were either more off leash areas or the off-leash laws were like those in NY or SF people wouldn't feel the need to break the rules as much as they do. I know that the 10+ adult men playing ultimate Frisbee on the Meridian play field this Sat. caused a lot more damage to the field than 10+ dogs could do, but the field is there to be played on, that's the point.

It won't get immediate results (or possibly any results ever) but here is one organization which aims to ban the wasteful automatic delivery of the phone book entirely:

I am looking for someone out there to teach me the ins and outs of my beloved 1982 Honda Nighthawk 450. There is no serious problem with it- it seems to burn a bit too much oil, but that's it. I really just want to have a better understanding of how my bike (and motorcycles in general) work, and what I can do to maintain it and keep it working.

In exchange I can teach you how to play pretty much any musical instrument (piano, guitar, bass, ukulele...), or how to make an amazing pizza or crepe, or how to convert diesel cars or trucks to run on waste veggie oil, or how to skateboard or snowboard... or anything else I might be able to share.

Hi all. I work at Seattle Stained Glass, at the corner of 1st Ave NE and 45th (kitty corner to Dick's). I also live a few doors up on the same street. Just thought that you all should know that someone walked into our office and stole our receptionist's purse at about 4:30pm on Thursday. She was back in the studio, but she had her purse tucked underneath her desk. I'm sure that someone walked by and saw that it was there unattended, and I admit that it was not the best place for her to leave it, but it was in broad daylight and any of us could have walked around the corner at any time.

Hi. Thank you for reporting this activity as it does sound suspicious. I happen to live in this part of Wallingford and know the gentleman you are describing. He actually lives in the neighborhood and has lived here for a long time. He has approached neighbors at times for money. I doubt he was trying to break in. He may have been trying to see if anyone was home in the hopes of asking for money. I know his neighbors and will see if they have noticed anything different happening lately.

As much as I liked having the liquor store in the old location (now Archie McPhee) I wonder if the Hollywood Video location would be a problem - it's a lot closer to the highway and the two groups of panhandlers who hang out around the 45th & 50th street exits.

Or at least in what, 30 years when it becomes public knowledge (don't all government secrets become public after some inordinate amount of time?) you can find out who knew... by then you could have drunk yourself silly on all the scotch available in the one upon a Hollywood video.

@Rover: I don't think it really has anything to do with when the dogs are on the field, so much as the fact that they are.

Ultimate and soccer games cause more damage, yes, but that's also why the fields get closed - to make sure the turf wear is minimized so those games can continue. The park's not all that big, and when dogs run over the same spot repeatedly, it does make a difference, however small. In any case, it doesn't address the fact that there's a sanitary component to all this as well.

Where is this New Yurk place you refer to? :)
