Smoking Etiquette

Now, we all know that the recently passed ordinance banning smoking within 25' of the entrance or air vents of an establishment have been moved somewhere to the bottom of the police's enforcement priority, down there with pulling over people driving 56 MPH in a 55 MPH zone and arresting car prowlers in Wallingford. So, what's to do for the folks who are bugged by the smoke? K.A.M. writes: I'm curious if you know the proper way to go about having…

Gas Works Park and the Burke-Gilman Trail will be pretty busy on Saturday morning, when the inaugural "Heroes Half Marathon and 10K" kicks-off at 7 a.m.  The right lanes of North Northlake Way and N. 34th Avenue will be closed to traffic as walkers and runners make their way over to the Fremont Bridge. Fruit Rites of Spring

Lily writes: It is that time of year again for our bizarre fruit tree fertility rites at the Good Shepherd Center (4649 Sunnyside Ave).  We'll be standing around in and under trees, applying nylon hose to baby fruit to hoodwink the apple maggots and codling moths into believing that perhaps in fact though it seems like fruit, it is instead some alien thing which they have no interest in...so far, they are sort of tricked, which is some unfair biological advantage…

Grammatrain Shoots Music Video at Gas Works Park

Local post-grunge rock band Grammatrain is taking over Gas Works Park this Thursday to shoot a music video for their single, "The Last Sound."  If you're a season ticket holder for the Sounders, you've most likely heard "The Last Sound"  at Qwest Field before kickoff.  The Sounders adopted the song as their team anthem, and co-owner Drew Carey endorsed the song and pledged to help the band make a "proper video". Carey introduced the band to video producer Nik Venet, whose…

News From Our Neighboring ‘Hoods

Here are some highlights of last week's haps beyond Wallingford: I can’t help but share two interesting pieces of information from Fremont Universe: First, the building which houses the Dubliner Restaurant and Pub has sold for an impressive $4.05 million. While there is no official word as to the fate of the Irish pub, it was rumored that the apartments above might be converted into a hotel. The second piece of news is a bit more bizarre: On Saturday morning, a man…

Destination: Yarn

Puget Sound yarn stores are coming together again May 20th to May 23rd to celebrate knitting and crocheting with a long weekend full of special events as part of the Fifth Annual Destination: Yarn tour. What makes this event special, according to Bad Woman Yarn co-owner Lee Burrow, is its collaborative nature:  "Few competing retail businesses plan something for all of those businesses to participate in together."  One year, they even hosted a "coopertition" -- a cooperative competition.  The 25 organizing…
