Helpin’ with the Hoopla

This is Juan -- a 17 year-old staff member at the Wallingford Boys and Girls Club -- covered in Cool Whip.  Juan has been a Boys and Girls Club member since he was 10 and last year, he became the youngest and newest counselor. You can see what sort of initiation the newly minted counselors endure. Creaming the counselor is only one of the many fun activities offered at the Halloween Hoopla, and this year the Wallingford Boys and Girls Club…

Martinis of May

(Wallyhood welcomes a new writer to our virtual pages, Cindy Yee) When the kind folks at Wallyhood invited me to join their ranks and contribute a post here and there, I did a little soul searching to figure out exactly what I could offer. I’m no wiz when it comes to neighborhood politics. I don’t have an in with the local schools and parks. And I don’t know a dang thing about nature, gardening, beekeeping or the like. Ah, but you…

First, from 3:30 to 5:00 they have a Halloween version of their monthly Ecstatic Family Dance time: "Come dress up with your kids and dance the mystery, magic and adventure of Halloween! Julia Cascioppo, Abroad

Normally, we would have passed on this story. Sure, chanteuse Julia Cascioppio lives right here in Wallingford, but her farewell show before leaves for "holiday enagagements in Mauritius" is across town on Capitol Hill. But then, she sent us this awesome picture: How'd you like to be traveling across the world in India and see a gigantic billboard of someone who lives down the street from you? So OK, wish her well and head over to Travelers, 501 E. Pine St…

Harvest

Want a taste of Wallyhood's own Hive Mind Honey? As long-time readers know, we've been keeping bees here in our Wallingford backyard for the past 15 years, give or take. We had to make a few adjustments recently, though, what with Baby Z running around out (it turns out toddlers and grab-level bee hives make a poor mix). So we headed down to the Rusty Rack Guys and picked up some used warehouse palette racks to pop the hives up off…

Green Halloween 2010

It’s that time of year to start planning your ghoulish Halloween events. Get in the Wallingford spirit and make it a Green Halloween?  This year Wallingford has made it easy for our community to partake in this nationwide phenomena.  Green Halloween will be occurring locally at Wallingford Center and other surrounding businesses, Sunday, October 31,  from 3-5pm. It will be easy to spot the businesses involved, as they'll have Green Halloween signs posted in their windows.  Businesses that are contributing to Green Halloween…

Ramblin’ in the Rain II

Put out for free, or just a good place to hang out? Big bald eagle guards big pile of boxes. A teeny garden gnome rock band! This is usually a spectacular view. Crossing Pacific St. to the Burke-Gilman Trail is frightening and nearly impossible. Pity the poor tourists who booked to Ride the Ducks on a day like today.
