Support Businesses to Support Seniors

It seems odd to me to hear seniors being called a "special interest group".  Because if you think about it, it's only a matter of time until we all become seniors (if we're lucky). Bearing that in mind, the Wallingford Community Senior Center needs your help.  Earlier this year an anonymous donor put up a $25,000 matching grant to help keep the struggling organization going and last I heard they still need $7,000 to get the full amount. The following businesses…

No December Dinner Hours at Varsity Inn

I have arrived, Wallingford.  Yes, I am now an official 'local."  I got a phone call today from my favorite waitress, letting Wallyhood know that the Varsity Inn will not be serving Mexican dinners for the month of December. The Varsity Inn will close at 3pm daily, effective today 11/29. Patty says that chef Rogelio will be traveling to Mexico in December, and that the Varsity Inn will not be open for dinner hours until he returns.  That's great news in…

Essential Lunch

A tribute to some women of Wallingford observed during lunch at the Essential Bakery: Pretty but faded Late middle-age settles in Blonde, blue-eyed beauty - Substantial as stone But sweet inside, stout and sweet As your big sister - Mom with little boy Thin, tired, doing too much Sit, put your feet up - Calm, leisurely lunch Sit alone with newspaper Life's work done, relax - (and me:) Small, anxious, scribbling What's in the notebook, missy? Blush - it's about you.

"I took John to the scene of the fight," Paul said, "which I had discovered…

Honey So Sweet

We had a good year beekeeping in Wallingford this year: 16 gallons of honey, weighing in at 180 lbs. Perhaps it was our new set-up (which you can read all about on our newly revived beekeeping blog, Hive Mind Honey) or just the bee gods smiling on us. We don't sell our honey, but if you want a jar, there is a way: as we did last year, we're giving a pint jar Wallingford's own Hive Mind Honey to the first…
