Niggles to Jiggles

Jordan January 28, 2011 6 Comments

The City Attorney’s office has asked the King County Superior Court to shut down Jiggles, the strip club on Roosevelt in the University District that opened in the spot where Giggles used to be (see Strip Club Coming the U District). Zoning law requires that “adult entertainment” facilities be located at least 800′ from schools, child care center, community centers, public parks or areas where children may congregate. According to the complaint (and confirmed by anyone who knows how to read a map), Jiggles is 60′ away from the University Child Development School, 569′ from the YMCA, 716′ from University …

Aerial Wallingford, 1929

Jordan January 27, 2011 4 Comments

The Seattlest has a visual puzzle this week, courtesy of our old friend RoKet and the Seattle Municipal Archives: a photo of Wallingford taken sometime around 1929, but from where? The angle suggests from a height, but an airplane doesn’t seem likely. Go on over, read what RoKet has to say, then speculate on where you think it was taken from.

Wallingford to get a bike boulevard

Margaret January 27, 2011 21 Comments

Wallingford will soon get a bike boulevard, thanks to the efforts of Cathy Tuttle, founder of Spokespeople–an organization dedicated to safe bicycling in Seattle.   A bike boulevard is a designated street on which bicycles have priority over motor vehicles, and bikes are free to use the middle of the street while the use of installed “traffic calming” techniques (signage, traffic circles, stop signs at intersections) force drivers to slow down, and be aware of bicyclists.  Bike boulevards are the foundation of bike systems in many cities including Portland, Berkeley, and Vancouver, BC.  Parking would still be available on the bike …

Changes Turns 22

Chris Witwer January 26, 2011 8 Comments

Wallingford’s only gay bar, Changes, is celebrating 22 years in Wallingford Friday. And Saturday.  And Sunday.  And MONDAY too!

And we’re all invited!

Changes is one of the longest running gay bars in all of Seattle.  The bar opened in 1989, under the name The Rat Hole.  Since then,  Changes has outlasted many competitors.  And, true to type (gay bar type, that is) Changes is always committed to sponsoring local gay sports programs.

This weekend’s anniversary celebration is a big “thank you” to the bar’s numerous patrons over the years.  Drop in and wish ’em a happy anniversary.

Here’s …

Joule’s Winter Supper Series

Margaret January 26, 2011 1 Comment

It’s back — Joule’s Winter Supper Series is underway with a different theme each Sunday. This coming Sunday is Hungary and Goulash, which I am all over after a recent trip to Budapest. I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect Goulash here in Seattle ever since, so Raichel and Seif–you’ve got a lot to live up to. No pressure or anything. Just sayin’.

Call Joule (206-632-1913) to make your reservation for any one of these Sunday themed suppers, from 3-9pm:

Sunday, January 30: Goulash from Hungary
Sunday, February 6: Red Hot Chili
Sunday, February 13: Dungeness Crab Cioppino
Sunday, …

Fruit Boom

Jordan January 26, 2011 Comments are off

On Monday we told you about all the volunteer and internship options at Seattle Tilth, figuring we’d get you in the mood for the impending Spring. Continuing that theme, we bring you a series of classes on improving your gardening acumen. Barb writes:

Would you like your fruit trees to produce more fruit? Do you wonder what’s all the buzz about mason bees? Think it’s time for your fruit trees to join a fruit tree guild?

City Fruit, the city-wide organization to promote care of urban fruit trees, is offering many classes on fruit tree-related topics, many at the nearby …
