(In honor of Martin Luther King Day, we're re-running this "classic" Wallyhood post from MLK Day 2010. Also, if you happen to have been listening to NPR's The Takeaway at 3:49 am this morning, you will have heard me being interviewed along with two other people named for MLK. The recording should be available on the The Takeaway web site, if it's not already.) My full, legal name is Jordan Luther King Schwartz. Kind of an unusual name for a white…

An e-mail we recently received from a friend began "There's a new restaurant in Freemont, want to try it out?" "Freemont"? Really? You left California almost a decade ago, lived in the neighborhood adjacent to Fremont for half that time, and still you're stuck with that extra 'e'? It brought to mind one of our favorite words-we-rarely-get-to-use, shibboleth: a custom, principle, or belief distinguishing a particular class or group of people The word comes from a Bible story, in which the men…

When It Rains, It Pours Americano

Bear with me for a moment here. Imagine you’re playing Super Mario World. You’ve just conquered the Forest of Illusion, but have yet to reach the Valley of Bowser. You find yourself in a wondrous place called Chocolate Island, where, true to its name, there’s chocolate at every turn. What’s more, the land is inhabited by wonderful creatures, such as the bounding, fire-breathing triceratops. I mean, a triceratops is awesome enough, but ONE THAT SHOOTS FIRE? That’s almost too awesome to…

7-Eleven by Post Office Closes Feb 1

We just got a tip that the 7-Eleven near the post office (4612 Stone Way N.) is closing. We called and confirmed: they'll be out as of Feb 1st and until then, it's 50% off most things in the store. Our evening call to the cashier didn't yield deep insight into complex landscape of the urban convenience market economic outlook, just that they were not renewing their lease and the existing employees did not know whether they would have jobs elsewhere.

School tours for Wallingford

Our neighborhood public schools are hosting their open houses and school tours beginning this month.  School tours are an excellent way to meet the principal and school staff, and catch a glimpse of a classroom or two while school is in session.  It's also a great time to ask questions and meet any parent volunteers who are on-hand to help lead the tours through the school.  No time to take a tour?  No worries, we'll go on a few and give…
