Wallingford: ‘Crunchy–But in a good way’

Wallingford has been dubbed as one of "The 20 Best Places to Live Now" according to the April issue of Seattle Met. In an interview with Wallyhood's Jordan Schwartz, Seattle Met's Matthew Halverson provides a perspective on our neighborhood's "crunchiness": When Jordan Schwartz moved to Wallingford from the East Coast in 1993, he found a neighborhood overrun by felines. 'You couldn’t walk down the street without seeing cats,' he says. 'They were all over.' Nearly 20 years later, he still feels…

Wallingford Community Center

With the economy the way it is, the long-time goal of Wallingford community activists to extract money from the city to bring a community center to Wallingford has drifted further out of reach. But, if we are nothing else, Wallingford is a neighborhood of roll-with-the-punches problem solvers. When they say it can't be done, we do it just to be show 'em. Thus, we unveil the "distributed community center" (or "virtual community center", if you prefer). It's like a building, but…

Mayor’s Public Safety Survey

The Mayor wants to hear from us, and boy do we have a lot to say if the Wallyhood comments sections about burglaries and graffiti are any indication. We are only asking for your opinion on the Seattle Police Department, not other police agencies such as…

Earth Hour tonight

Tonight at 8:30pm local time, the Space Needle will go dark along with many businesses and homes across Seattle.  And the entire globe.  Because it’s Earth Hour! There's no need to fret when the city goes dark tonight as  people shut off non-essential lights.  The dark won't be cause by tsunami or earthquake or oil spill or wind storm or flood or even nuclear fallout.  No, the Earth Hour movement is a call to action on climate change, supported by the…

Farmers Market Meridian-Bound

Can you think of anything more small town America than the editor of the local newspaper getting his news about the farmers market while getting his hair clipped at the local barbershop by the head of the local chamber of commerce? I swear, if Opie had walked in barefoot with a PB&J on white bread, Normanl Rockwell would have risen from his grave to paint it. Of course, it's not a newspaper, it's a blog, and Cutz Meridian isn't a barbershop,…

Woodlawn Santa Update II

Back in November, Wallyhood told you that Woodlawn Santa (aka Sharon Ehrig) was diagnosed with breast cancer and would be unable to maintain her winter wonderland over the holidays. Today, an update.  And a happy one at that! Surgery was a success, and Santa has completed all rounds of radiation. She is - and I quote - "99.9% better!"   She'd be 100% better if she weren't still so tired, but otherwise she's doing great.  She'll have a mammogram in late April…
