Dominica – Charting a Future for Paradise

As an aspiring writer, I spend a good portion of my daily brain power plotting and scheming my way out of the 9 to 5 and into lucrative authorhood. Don't get me wrong, I like my job (Hi Boss!) but who doesn't dream of turning a passion into a profession? One Wallingford woman has done just this: by the power of her artistic skill, powerful intelligence and outgoing personality (and a whole lot of work), Wyatt Bardouille's documentary film "Dominica -…

Vertical Gardening at 38th and Burke

Maybe it's the efficiency of it: a garden not limited by the footprint of the space, but dashing upwards, embezzling efficiency from the third dimension. Maybe it's just the idea that walls can be dynamic and alive. Whatever it is, we've always had a soft spot for vertical gardens and green walls. So maybe we're late to the party on this one, but it was a delight to see this grand wonder spreading and blossoming at the corner of 38th and…

Moles – do we love them or hate them?

The signs are familiar: mounds of fresh crumbly soil, raised shallow ridges of earth, or a lumpy area in the garden that collapses when you flatten it down; moles are busy. Some people have especially sharp reactions to moles - or mole-signs more precisely. Those of a tidy nature tend to think that mole hills and tunnels ruin the perfect greensward of a lawn. There is often a suspicion of plant damage. I am happy to accept the little guys as…

Overnight fire in Tangletown

Two adults and three children are safe after their house caught fire early this morning in Tangletown (5615 Kirkwood Pl. N). Our good neighbor to the north, My Green Lake, has the story, as does King 5 and Q13. According to the reports, a grandmother helped her son and young children out of the house safely. Investigators believe it is likely that the fire started in a bedroom, due to overheated wires. We're glad everyone is safe.
