Trick or Treating in Wallingford

While we may have earned third place as the most Trick or Treatable place in Seattle (according to Zillow), the Wallingford Chamber of Commerce tells us that they have every intention of taking back the #1 spot -- and they mean business! (< see what I did there?) This year, the Chamber has enlisted the support of 65 Wallingford merchants to hand out treats on Halloween, between 4pm - 7pm.** Look for an orange "trick or treats here" sign on participating…

Food Swap

We've had a few last minute cancellations for this Saturday's food swap, so if you've got any canned goods, baked goods, pickled goods, preserved goods, frozen goods or just plain ol' good goods, then pack 'em into a checkered towel, tuck 'em into a wicker basket and head over to Wallingford's on Food Swap this Saturday at 2 pm. No buying, no selling, just swapping what you've got for what others got. Last year, we had  beet shallot vinaigrette, kale pesto, basil…

Meaningful Movies: ‘The House I Live In’

Every Friday night for the last nine years, neighbors in our community have been showing free screenings of "Meaningful Movies" that cover issues around social justice, followed by an open community discussion about the evening's topic. The screenings take place at the Keystone Congressional Church (5029 Keystone Avenue N.) from 7:00pm to 9:30PM. Many times, the organizers bring in advocates about the issues presented in the evening's film, or the filmmakers themselves will stop by for a Q&A session after the…

Sic Transit WNA

When we first started started writing Wallyhood, one of the great puzzles was how the different civic organizations fit together: the Wallingford Chamber of Commerce, the Wallingford Community Council and the Wallingford Neighborhood Association (operating the Wallingford Neighborhood Office) each had slightly different, but slightly overlapping missions and goals. We sat on a stool at Mosaic and got a tutorial on it from Mary Heim, but still felt a little blurry on why a little community needed all three. Well, things…
