Breakfast, With a Side of Books

Whoever said lightning never strikes twice clearly never spent much time in the lunchroom of the Lincoln High School building, where I have had the good fortune to meet two very exceptional kitchen managers. Last summer, I was lamenting the departure of beloved lunch lady (and all around interesting human being) Joanne Querin-Sorenson, who was smartly snatched up by McDonald Elementary School when they moved into their permanent building this fall. My son’s school, APP@Lincoln, remained in the Lincoln High building…

Gluten Free Wallingford

I'm writing this having just returned from a brief trip to Portland, which absolutely blew me away with the ubiquity of gluten-free food options: it seemed like every restaurant, bakery, cafe and food cart had at least explicit gluten-free options, if not an entire menu of gluten-free food. Back home in Wallingford, we're catching up: We heard from Tilth that they'll be offering a gluten-free and a vegan menu: Maria Hines is ... offering a vegan and gluten-free a la carte and tasting…

What your neighbors are saying about you

Your neighbors are talking about you. Don't worry, it's all good. I promise! Last month, on Neighbor Appreciation Day, volunteers set up a few different stations along 45th St. where folks could write note cards celebrating their neighbors, and they collected some great messages. The cards were scanned and placed in to a patchwork poster which we thought we'd share with you here. Want your own? Click here for the downloadable Neighbor's Appreciatin' doc. Jenny Frankl, who represents the Department of Neighborhoods in…

Measuring for what?

Libby writes: I wanted to let folks know that this past week during the day a couple of guys showed up in our neck of the woods (Woodlawn/39th) claiming to be from the city of Seattle. They entered backyards - without permission and without people being home - saying they were measuring all structures for a survey...including our huge oak tree!  My husband was home and said they had no ID and seemed to be pretending to "measure" stuff.  When he…

Lost and Found: Homeless Youth in Wallingford

March 5, 2013: This post has been updated to reflect the passage of SB 5147 concerning juveniles and runaway children. The following is a guest post by Ray Lumpp--a writer for AllTreatment.com, a local resource for individuals and families facing addiction and mental health issues in Washington State. Seattle boasts a comprehensive support network for adults facing addiction and mental health issues: from the free Wallingford public library, one can find local food banks, needle exchanges, drop-in centers, and emergency housing.…
