Helen has lived in Wallingford for 16 years and think it’s the best neighborhood in Seattle, possibly the world. She has worn a track between her house, QFC and the library and spends a lot time poking her nose into things. She is a mother, does volunteer work and is interested in local, green and child-related issues. She has an advanced degree in English literature and thus reads a lot and enjoys the craft of writing. She also works part-time for her husband’s software company (doesn’t everyone have a software company around here?).

What Happened to “The Wave”?

Helen May 26, 2010 42 Comments

Not the stadium wave (good riddance, no offense).  I mean that friendly little gesture the other motorist gives you after you courteously pull over on a narrow Wallingford street to make room for him or her to go by in the other direction.

This used to be absolutely compulsory under the super-strict–Seattle-civility code.  It didn’t matter if it was in the middle of the night, if the other driver only had one arm, was in the middle of a raging argument, or if you were actually pulling over to park.  They always gave you that friendly wave.  And although small, …

Ex Urbs Wallingford

Helen May 24, 2010 3 Comments

Snippets of interesting goings-on in the lands beyond our fair realm:

Free (Empty) Milk Cartons!:  According to My Green Lake, PCC on Roosevelt is giving away free Organic Valley milk cartons on May 27th from 2-6 PM for the Milk Carton Derby.  Somebody must have had to drink an awful lot of milk. Boom Noodle Coming to U. Village:  U District Daily says a new Japanese restaurant is set to open in early July (and they’re hiring, so send in your resume). No Left Turns from 15th onto 45th:  Plans to repave 15th Ave. NE in January…

Inspired by Wallyhood’s post, here are images from Sock Monster‘s grand opening Friday night:

What flavor are your feet?

Funky, chunky soaps.

ADDAMS FAMILY PINBALL!

Les chapeaux.

Crap tons of socks (to lift a phrase of Wallyhood’s).

Water, Water Everywhere at Farmers Market

Helen May 20, 2010 1 Comment

After a morning of unnaturally bright sunshine and ominous radio warnings of thunderstorms, rain- and 50-knot wind-advisories, my daughter and I set off for the first day of the Wallingford Farmers Market with umbrellas and trepidation.

We arrived on the dot at 4 for Rachel Yang of Joule Restaurant‘s cooking demonstration.  Asparagus was clearly the ingredient of the day (imagine cooking this on a hotplate under a tent):

Asparagus Pesto and Smoked Salmon on Hominy Toast Asparagus, Purple Potato, Cheese Curd Omlet with Chickweed Salad Asparagus and Orange in Sweet Millet with Creamy Orange Ice Cream

This being early in …

And, now, ladies and gentlemen . . . drumroll, please!  Tonight’s Top Ten List is the winners of the Wallyhood Pet Motto Contest!  Because we enjoyed so many of them, Rita has awarded Honorable Mentions in the following ten categories (in no particular order), with prizes going to First Place and Runner Up: Most canine-centric:   My little canine scruffball’s (Rosie) motto is: “Now that you are paying for pet insurance, you have assured that nothing will happen to me.” – Karen.  And, My rottenweiler, Woody’s, motto is “It’s all about me, by the way!” – Janey Most feng shui…

Janet, the First Lady of Wallingford

Helen May 13, 2010 4 Comments

Let me say up front that I have been neighbors and friends with Janet Stillman these last 11 years and I admire her.  Deeply.  Because she is talented and energetic and caring and I can’t think of anyone else who has done more for this neighborhood.  And, no, no one elected her First Lady of Wallingford but in my mind that’s what she is.  There, I’ve put all my cards on the table.

Janet’s official title is the Director of the Wallingford Neighborhood Office, where she has worked since 1998 when she retired from Boeing.  She and I had a …

Word on the Street This Week

Helen May 12, 2010 Comments are off

Let’s eavesdrop on what the neighbors have been saying this week…online.  Jump in to join the conversation at the Wallyhood Forums link above.

Parking in our tight urban environment continues to be a hot topic in “Too many cars!”.  If a property near you has way too many drivers for the curb space in front of it, check for tips and to have your say, or if you happen to live in such a property, likewise! Tempted to celebrate the temporary cessation of rain by hanging out your laundry on “Outdoor Clotheslines”?  See if there are any city regulations about…
