Since the start of the pandemic, most Seattle Public Library branches have offered limited services or been closed outright. It was only last September that our neighborhood branch partially reopened. Jason Davis, Temporary Supervising Librarian of the Wallingford branch, now informs us that, beginning this week, the branch will resume normal hours. These are:

Mondays and Tuesdays 1pm to 8pm Wednesdays and Thursdays 11am to 6pm Off on Fridays Sundays noon to 5pm

In addition, the exterior book drop is now open 24/7. No more excuses for not returning your borrowed items!…

No, people aren’t getting all worked up over Seattle Public Utility’s Ship Canal Water Quality Project. Oceans of Emotion is, in fact, the newest art installation to decorate the work site. (A previous art work heralded the start of the project.)

The goal of the project, which extends from Ballard on the west end of site to Wallingford on the east end, is to provide temporary storage space for runoff and sewerage during times of heavy rainfall when treatment plants cannot handle the load. Many more details are available here.

For those not entirely in the know as regards the doings of the National Hockey League during the height of the summer, the league will be holding an “expansion draft” this Wednesday. This is to allow the league’s newest team, our Seattle Kraken, to acquire a roster of players for the upcoming season. The Kraken will be allowed to select one player from each existing team within the limits of various and sundry league rules.

If you’ve walked or driven along 35th St. towards Stone Way, you may have wondered what is going on just north of the transfer station at 35th and Interlake. That site is the location of the eastern terminus of the Ship Canal Water Quality Project which I wrote about here back in January of 2020. The overall goal is to reduce sewage overflows into the ship canal during times of heavy rain by providing a very temporary storage location for that water: a big tunnel running underground from Wallingford to Ballard. Our neighborhood now has its own Free Little Art Gallery. Similar to the many “little free libraries” that dot our sidewalks, the concept is to take a piece and, if possible, leave a piece.
