Wallyhood is a "group blog" with many contributors. However, whenever you see a post written by "Wallyhood", that's Jordan Schwartz, Wallyhood's founder, Editor-in-Chief, Publisher, community manager, janitor, account executive, and chief enthusiast. Jordan has lived in the same little house in Wallingford since 1993. He arrived from points east with his cat, Fourth, and has since been joined by his wife Michelle, son Zevin, chickens Dominique, Winny and Betty and bees innumerable and unnamed. Days find him working on Pathable, a social networking service for conferences and events.

Molly Moon was a girl scout

Jordan January 14, 2010 Comments are off

Ya can’t make Scout Mint Ice Cream without genuine Girl Scout’s Thin Mints, so Molly Moon‘s is offering to buy ’em from local scouts. To keep both her stores stocked through 2010, she says she’ll need 4,500 boxes, which is enough to give us a stomach ache just thinking about it.

Last year, her ice cream empire bought $18,000 worth of cookies and helped to send more than 30 girls to Girl Scout camp with “camperships” (scholarships earned by campers that assist in sending them to camp).

Moon is a former Girl Scout herself, according to her press release, attended …

Big Tree Bikes comes to Wallingford

Jordan January 13, 2010 4 Comments

When it rains, it pours. After years of no bike shop at all in Wallingford (anyone remember Bike Smith on 45th St? All that’s left is an orphaned web site), Wallingford now has two, count them, TWO bike shops.

A few months back, Speedy Reedy pedaled about 100′ west across Stone Way, thus crossing over from Fremont into Wallingford (and leaving space for the fantastic Solsticio coffee shop to put down roots in its place). Now, Big Tree Bikes has taken up residence on Stone Way, just above 40th next to the Stone Soup Theater.

We locked up on the …

Help a Texan Out

Jordan January 13, 2010 Comments are off

We know, we know, we swore off the car prowl posts, for fear of creating the false impression that Wallingford is less safe than other neighborhoods (it’s not), but here you’ve got a traveler getting a bad impression of our little ‘hood, so maybe we can help her out. Karen writes:

Hi, I’m from TX, but I was just visiting a friend here in Wallingford for one evening.  My friend wanted to show me the city lights from Gas Works Park so we stopped by for about 15 minutes around 8PM.  In that time, my rental car had been broken …

A team of 60,000 Sculptors

Jordan January 12, 2010 6 Comments

It’s an open secret that the art produced by many “masters” is not entirely of their own hand. Michelangelo, Da Vinci, even Chihuly, all had teams of apprentices rendering some of the laborious details of their work.

I’ll do them one better: I had a team of 60,000 help me with my sculptures. 60,000 bees, that is.

As regular readers know, I keep two hives of bees in my back yard. As you may not know, I’ve been experimenting with placing bits of randomness in the hive at the beginning of the season, and encouraging the girls to encase or …

45th St Viaduct to U Village to close temporarily

Jordan January 12, 2010 5 Comments

We’ve always enjoyed the rich, swampy smell of the Burke-Gilman trail as it wends under the 45th St Viaduct (the bridge that leads from U-District down to University Village) and alongside the hill leading up to the U-District. It feels like the bike path has taken a brief detour through the Pleistocene, engendering Sound of Thunder-esque daydreams.

Chris MacKenzie, Wallingford Community Council rep to the City, University, Community Advisory Committee reports that changes may be afoot in that region:

The 45th Street viaduct, originally built in 1938, has reached the end of its structural life and is going to be …

Meridian School seeks auction donations

Jordan January 11, 2010 Comments are off

There’s a great little school tucked into the Good Shepherd Center, and they’re asking for donations from the community for their annual fundraising auction. Thomasin Levin, an alumni and a board member, writes:

The Meridian School is an accredited, independent elementary school and is calling all Wallingford supporters to please contribute to the annual auction.  If you would like your business to reach over 400 people, most who spend their time in Wallingford, then this is for you!  We have advertising opportunities in the catalog or would also like to auction off your gifts the night of the auction on …
