Hey folks, I thought I’d share this with all of you. If you have an Amazon Echo, live in the city (being interested in Wallyhood probably means you do), and have trouble remembering when your curbside garbage/recycle collection is day, my Alexa skill may prove useful!
Hope it helps you out!
People who don’t pay a company to listen to everything that happens in their home can look up the collection schedule here:
For those of you who do enjoy the voice interface, please do give me feedback if you end up using the skill. I’d be interested to hear about ways to make it better that I may not have thought of!
What is your involvement with Amazon and this system? You’re first message made no mention of a connection between you and this system but obviously there is one.
Actually, his first message called it “my” skill, so I assumed he created it.
Personally, I put an item on my phones calendar that reminds me every two weeks about recycling (the only service that alternates weeks – the others are easy to remember).
Thanks Rob. That clears up a lot of confusion. I didn’t know that Amazon refers to software application installed on the Alexa platform as skills. I thought the skill Gasworks was refered to was the knowledge that one could do this.
Thanks all; I should probably have made this clearer when I first posted.
Right, think of an Alexa skill as the equivalent of an app on your smart phone. I wrote this skill because I just wanted to make something that I thought would be useful. When I’m in my kitchen, it’s convenient to ask the device when the next collection day is and not have to think about holiday schedules or going to the Seattle Public Utilities web site.
My Alexa skill actually gets the collection schedules from Seattle Public Utilities. So it’s the same info you’d see on the web site, just spoken aloud.
I’m not associated with Amazon in any way. Just someone in the neighborhood who thought others might find this convenient too.
Gasworks, thank you for the clarification and thank you for sharing your skill.
Thank you for this information, gasworks guy. I appreciate it. I do have Alexa, and appreciate the music I can ask for, and also use the timer a lot. Sometimes I unplug it. I think AI has invaded our world whether we like it or not, regardless of having an Alexa.
Uncle matt, I don’t think he has any financial interest in his post, he was just sharing some information.
