Aaaah! Earthquake! Aaaah!

OK, probably not as bad as the headline makes it out to be. As everybody knows by now, there was an earthquake yesterday, 4.5 on the Richter Scale, 5:25 am Friday morning, centered about 14 miles northwest of downtown. Honestly, we slept through it, and we're not sure we would even report it, but all the other neighborhood blogs did, and now we feel left out.To make up for our deliquency, we will report in reporterly style the following received from…

Thanks

My parents are visiting their new grandson this weekend (and, incidentally, their son and daughter-in-law). Last night, we had a long and earnest discussion about the concept of the "urban village", and what qualities Wallingford had that made it qualify for the label. Yes, it has a tree-lined residential area surrounding a small merchant core of mostly-locally-owned shops selling the basic necessities: food, clothing, medicine, building supplies and ice cream, but it wasn't until my mother approached me earlier this evening…

Survey Says…Garbage!

Cathy from Sustainable Wallingford asked us to post link to this survey, sayin':The February 4th meeting of the Wallingford Community Council will feature representatives from Seattle Public Utilities, a member of Councilmember Richard Conlin’s staff, and (we hope) an advocate for zero waste design ideas. Archie McWallingford

Not since Wehrner Von Brown came to the States have we seen such a coup. Wallyhood was dutifully investigating this story, waiting until all the facts were in to report it, but prodding from tipster John has convinced us that we can not wait, we must go public now with the information we have, unanswered questions and all.Archie McPhee's is returning to Wallingford.Yes, that epic maelstrom of Bacon band-aids, Nancy Pearl the Librarian Dolls, remaindered Chinese test-pilot uniforms and one-of-a-kind Pez…

Payday Moans

Wallyhood has generally played the booster for businesses in Wallingford (with the exception of the Erotic Bakery, which was flat out and unnecessarily rude to us, and which also makes lousy tasting cakes). Hey, we even saw some good in condo development. Our good will does not extend to Pay Day Loans. It is an embarrassment and a blight on the neighborhood. This company and companies like it prey on the least fortunate, charging usurious rates (391% APR!) to those who…

City Cellar Wine Tasting

A year ago September, we quit our jobs, rented out our house, packed 10 lbs of clothes and 20 lbs of travel guides into our backpacks and headed to Europe. We started in Paris, made our way down through France into Spain, bumped over to Berlin and finished up with a month and a half in Italy, most of the time spent in a rented flat in Florence.Needless to say, we drank some wine. We're not connoisseurs by any means, nor…
