Aurora Bridge Lanes / Bus Fare

The Seattle Times Bumper-to-Bumper column explains today how the bridge lanes are recovering from the snowpocalypse and why the lane widths are what they are:"The recent snowstorms [in December] resulted in the accelerated deterioration of the lane markings due to the combination of plowing, sanding, tire chains and inclement weather," answered Eric Widstrand, the Seattle Transportation Department's traffic-operations manager. "We were aware of the lane-marking conditions on the Aurora Avenue Bridge. In fact, we repainted the lane markings beginning on Jan.…

Tweedy and Popp: Inside Scoop

We previously reported that a bucket brigade was in the offing to spirit Tweedy and Popp from the north side of 45th Street (where it has lived since 1960) to its new home-to-be in Wallingford Center. Intrigued by the idea and eager to play cub reporter, we dropped in on the dusty old hardware store Saturday afternoon to get the poop. [Ed. Note: cub reporters are generally discouraged from using the term "poop" to describe hard bitten investigative journalism.]We were delighted…

Shalom, Shalom House

Shalom House, run by the Seattle Association for Jews with Disabilities and providing assisted living to adults with cognitive disabilities, has closed its home at the corner of Latona and 42nd Street, which is now for sale ($720k, contact Heidi at Windermere). Wallyhood got its first peek at the now empty interior today, and found it spacious and in good repair, although somewhat institutional in layout and decor.Best wishes to the residents, at least one of whom was a well-known neighborhood…

Wallyhood Photo Contest

The rolling hills of Gasworks, the sylvan cloister of the Good Shepherd Center, the bustling mercantile hub of 45th Street, the quiet lanes of Tangletown...is there a neighborhood anywhere filled with such variety and beauty as Wallingford? I think not!To prove it, Wallyhood is sponsoring a Wallingford photography contest. The rules are simple. The winning photo must be:Taken in Wallingford (see Walkscore's map if in doubt)Of something in Wallingford (i.e., no photos of the Cascades as viewed from...)Taken from a publicly…

Paint Your Street

Wallyhood totally blew it. Several weeks ago, Gene e-mailed us to let us know that the city was holding an open informational session on Saturday, January 31st to let people know how they could go about painting their intersection the way the intersection of 48th and Burke is painted (below), including information on permitting and possible funding sources.Well, we thought we'd be clever and wait until shortly before the informational session itself to let you know, so it would be fresh…

Clean-Up Report

The EWHA clean-up, previously advertised on these pages, was held today and proved an unqualified success. Fifteen Wallingford residents reported for duty, including a number of new faces lured in through the blog. Based on our burgeoning numbers, Hoyt and Scott made the bold and daring decision to expand our officially adopted area to include areas of Thackeray and 5th Ave, a geography previously considered unachievable. Wallyhood's own assigned territory was Latona between 45th and 42nd, so if you see garbage…
