Jhanjay Jamboree Review

  • Post author:

We practiced vegetarianism for many years, 23 in all, before we finally gave it up and ordered a steak at El Gaucho‘s and had done with it. Why, after all those long years of fastidious self-denial, did we jump from the wagon?

Honestly, we were hungry.

Not in the “I haven’t eaten all day” sense, but, rather, in the “I’m so tired of eating beans and rice and cheese for protein, I want a meal that’s going to stick with me for hours” sense.

Anyway, it’s with that in mind that we read and appreciate The Edibility Exam, the food blog written by our Wallingford neighbors E & J. The premise: she’s a vegetarian, he’s a carnivore, so together, they’re a “biculinary couple” reviewing restaurants, recipes and news. This week they take on Wallingford’s Jhanjay Jamboree, the all-vegetarian Thai restaurant snuggled in between Chocolati and Kids on 45th.

We won’t steal their thunder by revealing their verdict, you’ll have to read it yourself. We will, however, repeat our favorite line:

Even though I generally don’t like mushrooms (yuck!), I can appreciate them in the right context, like when they’re mushed beyond recognition into compressed cakes of pseudo-meaty goodness.

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.

I was just wondering about this restaurant as I work in the hood. Thanks! Great Blog.

Hey, thanks for the link, Wallyhood! We’ll be updating frequently, and would love comments and suggestions!

(Though I think we’ll skip the $99 TV dinners at Babalu’s, thanks.) 😉
