Words of the Week

Hey Capitol Hill, how’s it going? So, what’s your Word of the Week? Hmmm? Don’t have one? Oh, that’s a pity. We’ve got two. Yeah, we know, it seems like a lot, but you get used to it.

The “Original” Word of the Week is at 44th Ave NE and Thackery and this week it’s shako, which means “a cylindrical or conical military hat with a brim and a plume or pom-pom”. Yeah, that’s one over on the right.

The “Upper Wallingford Word of the Week” is on 47th Ave NE between Latona and Thackery. This week, it’s fubsy, which is British slang for “fat and squat”.

Anyway, shame about you not having a Word of the Week. We hope you don’t develop an inferiority complex just because our vocabulary is becoming richer and more complex than yours.

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.
