Wallingford Honey Giveaway

Jordan Jordan May 8, 2009 6 Comments

Wallyhood's Bee Hives

We’re giving away Wallingford honey.

We’ve mentioned that we have, in our Wallingford back yard, two bee hives (we chronicle our adventures in backyard beekeeping over at the Hive Mind Honey blog). The honey they make is delicious, and has been featured on the menu at Molly Moon, Sutra and now several Tom Douglas restaurants (Dahlia Lounge, Palace Kitchen).

The hives are productive, making around 10 – 15 gallons per year (roughly 200 lbs), but we’re not interested in selling it. Rather we’ve been bartering honey for the food at the restaurants that are using it (cleverly getting ourselves both a free meal and the opportunity to sample what our honey tastes like when transformed by great chefs).

Hive Mind HoneyWell, we’ve been getting a number of requests from Wallyhood readers who are interested in getting a sample themselves, and frankly, we can’t blame you. Not only does it have a unique, slightly spicy flavor, but many claim that eating local honey helps confer immunity to allergies (the idea being you’re getting low doses of local pollens, helping your body habituate).

So, we’re saying yes…with a catch. We’ve set aside a dozen pint jars of Hive Mind honey that will give to Wallyhood readers who make a donation of $25 or more to FamilyWorks food bank and family center, providing safety net services to the Wallingford community and beyond.

Sure, kind of pricey for a jar of honey, but helping out others in need…worth more than gold.

Interested? Drop us a line with your name, contact info and address. We’ll even deliver anywhere in the Wallingford borders.

Update (7:44 pm): Thanks to everyone who offered to donate to FamilyWorks. We’ve had more takers than we originally set aside, so the honey’s all gone! Of course, don’t let this stop you from donating to FamilyWorks anyway.

Thanks again! Everyone who sent mail or left a comment prior to now, we’ll be biking around the ‘hood in the next few days making deliveries. Watch for more info.

I am in! $25 for a jar of hive mind honey is a steal. My last jar just ran out and my allergies do seem to be getting worse!

It is the sweetest most delicious health tonic in Wallingford. Pharmaca can’t compete! 🙂

You can count me in for a jar! Family Works is an amazing organization with a commited staff that works tirelessly to help alleviate hunger in our neighborhood. It is thoughtful acts such as this that help make Wallingford a community and not just a neighborhood. Thank you for you helping.

By the way I had the Honey lavendar ice cream at Molly Moon’s it is fantastic! I can’t wait to try your honey on it’s own.
