Gas Works Parking Lot Closing

Jordan Jordan July 7, 2009 2 Comments

As of Friday, July 10th at 5 pm, the Seattle Parks Dept is permanently closing the parking lot in the Northwest corner of Gas Works (that’s the ghetto one towards Fremont, not the main one on on the North) to convert it to more park:

Parks will landscape the area with western red cedars, native ground covers and create an entrance with birch trees and decorative shrubs. A new pathway will be constructed with ADA- compliant crushed surfacing material. The project will also construct two rain gardens to manage storm water runoff. This work is being done as part of the Gas Works Park Landscape Master Plan that was developed in 1971 by Richard Haag Associates. The project will be completed by fall 2009.

Well, if this is part of a plan developed in 1971, you can’t fault them for being too hasty.

Yeah, but wouldn’t they have to study the environmental impact of landscaping, water runoff management, and the ADA-compliant crushed surfacing materials? (Yeah, I lived in Lake City last year.)

Just joking. I’m thrilled to hear it, though at first I was just certain Mr. Wallyhood meant 1991 instead of 1971. 😉
