Lower Woodland Gets $5M Facelift

  • Post author:

Continuing a trend of park improvements, Lower Woodland Park is due for an upgrade, and Mayor Nickels will be on hand next Thursday, July 23rd noon – 12:30 pm between fields # and #2 to kick down the inaugural shovel:

Please join Mayor Greg Nickels and Seattle Parks and Recreation as we mark the beginning of construction for Lower Woodland Playfields  #2 and #7. This project, funded by the 2008 Parks and Green Spaces Levy, is one of Mayor Nickels’ Seattle Jobs Forward projects. Seattle  voters approved this Levy in November 2008. Planning, design, and construction of the new fields will be completed less than a year later, in early fall 2009.

The renovation replaces the existing sand/silt fields with synthetic turf. The renovated field #7, which will include energy efficient lighting, will accommodate adult soccer and men’s lacrosse. Playfield #2 will  be for adult soccer, women’s lacrosse, and Ultimate Frisbee.

According to the project web site, the total project budget is $5.2 million. We can only imagine they are synthesizing the turf out of gold.

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.

I’m so ready for this project to get started. Those dirt soccer fields are pretty bad. Can’t wait for the new surface!

I agree with Tone. I can’t wait for this project to get started! In addition to the soccer and lacrosse lines, there will be markings for ultimate frisbee fields on #2.

The budget actually sounds pretty reasonable for an upgrade of this size. Unfortunately, it’s probably not going to be enough to replace the cinder track around #7 with a better surface.

While he’s making his grandiose speech next week, please keep in mind that Greg Nickels opposed this parks levy last year.
