Seattle Night Out

Jordan Jordan August 1, 2009 1 Comment

Would you like the police to come to your party? If you’re like us, the mere question flashes you back to the last time the police showed up at your party: it’s 4 a.m., you’re wearing a furry tutu and a leather halter top, your pupils are the size of quarters and you’re trying to explain that, despite a minor noise complaint, they still don’t have the right to enter your property without your permission.

OK, maybe you’re not that much like us.

Anyway, it’s not too late to invite the police and the fire department to your party. Your block party, that is.

This Tuesday, August 4th is the Seattle Night Out (previously covered here), an evening where streets will be closed across the city so neighbors can come out and enjoy each other’s company. If your street hasn’t organized one, it’s not too late! All you need to do is drop off notices in your neighbors’ boxes letting them know, and plan to go outside. And the deadline for officially registering your block party with the city (thus qualifying you for a friendly visit from the men in blue, and, if you’re lucky, a genuine fire truck) has been extended to Monday at 9 a.m. Check their web site for full details.

Of course, you don’t need to do anything special to celebrate, just go outside and talk to your neighbors. Heck, do it right now.

Does anyone know which streets are having block parties this evening? – it’s such a lovely day I’d love to walk with intention and knowing there would a street party at the end of my journey would be the icing on the cake. thx
