Reminder: Senior Center Gala tonight

  • Post author:

Fundraiser PosterTonight, Thursday the 19th, is the “Brother Can you Spare A Dime (or More)?” soup line fundraiser for the Wallingford Senior Center. We just saw the list of donations, and it should really be called “A Taste of Wallingford”: Joule‘s special iced tea, Chutney‘s fruity drink soft drinks, beer from Fremont Brewing Co, coffee from Starbucks, soups from Selena’s Guadalajara, Ivar’s, and the Rusty Pelican, wine from City Cellars, breads from Essential Baking, cookies from Fainting Goat, donuts from Mighty O Donuts, cupcakes from Trophy and more.

There’s also going to be a host of raffle items, buttons, bluegrass music and more.

A couple points to clear up: this is a separate fundraiser than the auction we’re holding here on Wallyhood, so don’t get yourself confused. It will be differently awesome. Also, there’s a suggested $20 admission donation, but don’t get all hung up on the $20. You got $14.29? You got some change in an old mug on your bureau? You got a few Canadian loonies tucked into the back of a drawer? Fine, fine, fine, they say, just get yourself down to show your support. Nobody’s going to be turned away for lack of dough.

Tonight. 6 – 8 pm at the Good Shepherd Center (4649 Sunnyside Ave N). If you respect your elders, you’ll be there, sonny!

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.

Don’t know how much money they raised, but there were a ton of people there when I arrived at 7:00 — I could barely make it through the room. There were soups from Ivar’s, the Guadelajara and the Rusty Pelican, a table giving away nice glasses of donated wine and a bunch of cool-looking desserts. I gave them all my money, between entry donation, table donations and raffle tickets.

And I’m glad to hear that the auction is on Wallyhood, because I sure didn’t see that at the senior center.

I’m wishing they raised their $50 K, but if that didn’t work out, at least the proceedds will go to Solid Ground.
