FREE Comic Book Day! – May 1st

Helen April 27, 2010 6 Comments

Have a secret (or not-so-secret) love of comic books?  Know there’s a totally rad comic book shop right here in Wallingford?

Annual Free Comic Book Day is Saturday May 1st and Comics Dungeon on 45th and Thackeray is giving away a variety of comic books all day from 11-8.  The books are special editions (some first prints) marked with the “Free Comic Book Day” logo and come from many publishers, including DC, Archie and Dark Horse.  Check out these samples:

There is also a sale on merchandise that day and a large inventory reduction event the next day, May 2nd.  If that wasn’t enough, there will also be people dressed up in Star Wars costumes both days!  Bring your camera or don your own Jedi robes.

Comics Dungeon has been in its current location for the last 10 years (it was farther up 45th St. for several years before that) and has one of the biggest customer bases in the city.  They have a popular subscription service where you can pick up your titles every Wednesday and also one of the largest back-issue selections in town.  I spoke to John who showed me their amazing collection of rare editions dating from the 1940’s.  Of course, they also have plenty of fun and cheap books for kids in addition to the adult connoisseur.

And, no, it is not geeky to be into comic books.

FYI, here are the Free Comic Book titles listed on their flyer:  First Prints – Iron Man/Thor, Doctor Solar, Shrek.  Reprints:  Korgi, Owly.  The person I interviewed mentioned Archie, DC and Dark Horse but he may have been talking in general, not what they’ll have on Saturday.  –Helen

This is a fantastic store with knowledgeable staff! Do consider buying something while you’re there. The store pays for the “free” comics (although at highly discounted prices), so consider giving a little love back.

It’s a great store & I hope to see everyone there on Saturday (and I’ve heard the 501st Legion may also be hanging out Sunday, too). Though I’m guessing  it will be hard to find *all* of the free comics at the Dungeon, here’s a full list of the free comics coming out that day –

The owner, Scott, was kind enough to let me interview him for our weekly comic podcast a few weeks back
