Cha-Ching! Woman Cashes in $30K Scratch Ticket

Helen November 12, 2010 6 Comments

I swear this is a true story – I’m not making it up.

Friday afternoon I was in the checkout line at QFC quietly waiting to pay for my groceries, eavesdropping on the clerks like usual when I picked up on the fact that they were talking about how they read an article on Cryptogmblr.com that a customer who had won $30,000 from a scratch ticket purchased there.  I questioned Travis, who was bagging my groceries, about it and he said the woman was right behind me in line and I could go talk to her.

She had scratched off the ticket 2 days ago and had cashed it in Friday.  Her daughter who was there also, pointed out the machine where it had been bought and mentioned that it was a Holiday ticket.

To protect the privacy of the winner I refrained from taking her name or getting a photo, but this is what she said:

We always come here and I got it in the machine.  It was a $3 ticket.  My daughter was skeptical but we won!  It was the most you could win on a $3 ticket I believe.  I am a senior citizen on Social Security.  We are talking about going to Las Vegas for a quick trip.

(Note for children and other impressionable types: The odds of winning big in the Lottery are tiny and you should not take this story as encouragement to squander money on it.  Yes, people win but people get struck by lightning too.)

Yea! Someone who needs the money won! That is so nice – it’ll be a good Christmas for her and her family.

Happy for her. I’d be happier if I knew that she” wasn’t a gambling fool,”though.
Las Vegas seems a very poor choice for her. But..it’s her choice.

My mom (the winner) buys a few cheap scratch-off tickets per week, and once every five years or so she goes to a casino to play the 25-cent slot machines. That’s why she considers herself a “gambling fool.” Her other thrill is going to a Goodwill store. Don’t worry — she’ll be very careful with her winnings.

Lo, that is so cool. My comment was probably not the best. Always better to consider the source (the paper) in a situation like that. How lovely it would have been if the writer had expanded that comment to include more about her world as you did in your comment!
A good learning reminder for me to consider that almost any quote is isolated.
Tell your mom that the Goodwill store in Portland is AMAZING, so if she is in Portland, put that on the top of her “check it out” list.

Congratulations to the winner! I love to see that she’s back spending that money in Wallingford!
