60-Second Interview! – Greg Martin

Helen March 25, 2011 3 Comments

Wallyhood’s sponsors are sweet and neat.  Here’s a quick snapshot of another one.

Greg Martin, Assistant Head Instructor at School of Oom Yung Doe (hefting a Chinese long staff with broadsword, don’t try this at home):

Where are you from? – I was born in Redmond and was raised in Kirkland where I still live

What’s the secret of your success? – Connection with the community.  We’ve had over 100 community events like women’s self-defense workshops and stress-relief workshops.  We’ve worked with local schools, especially Hamilton, teaching free after-school lessons.  I was Volunteer of the Year at the YMCA and am the newly-elected V. P. of the Chamber of Commerce.

What do you like best about Wallingford? – I like the community feeling, how welcoming everyone is.  Wallingford is almost like a family.  There are a lot of families here and that creates a positive, energetic atmosphere.

Finally, what’s your favorite flavor of ice cream? – The Salted Caramel Chocolate-Chip Gelato at Tutta Bella.  (I noticed Gea Bassett last time chose the same flavor of cupcakes!)

Interested in trying out the School of Oom Yung Doe? We’ve got free passes! E-mail us at [email protected] and let us know you’re interested, and we’ll give one free one week pass to a respondent selected at random.

If he likes the neighborhood so much, why does he live in Kirkland?

What a great example for the community. I wish more people cared about building up their communities like this young man. Why the question about the ice cream?

Just for fun! Knowing someone’s ice cream preference is a key to their character, don’t you think? No, not really, ice cream is fun.

I would like to add that many people in Wallingford businesses don’t actually live here and their contributions to our community are still vital and valued.
