Food Swap

Jordan Jordan March 22, 2011 4 Comments

Do you cook, bake, can, jar, grow, distill, brew, shepherd or summon? Do you, perhaps, cook, bake, can, etc. too much? Interested in swapping some of what you got for some of what someone else has baked, canned, jarred, grown, etc?

Then come on out to the first ever Wallyhood Food Swap on Saturday, April 16th at 2 pm!

Here’s how it works:

  • Participants bring something or somethings they’ve made
  • Everyone’s items are placed on tables where they can be viewed, alongside a blank card
  • Everyone looks over the goods and writes their name on the card next to the things you want, along with what you’re offering to swap for
  • After an hour, it’s swap time! You find the people on your card that have offered something you want and you swap! What’s a “fair swap”? It’s up to you. Nobody has to swap, the cards are just a starting point for conversations.

So simple, right? Here what you can bring:

  • Must be homemade or homegrown by you
  • Must be consumable (i.e., no soap or crafts, just food, drink and the like)
  • Must be wrapped or packaged for swapping
  • Your “presentation area” will be 1.5′ square, so something needs to fit there (but you can stow extras in a corner)

You can bring several different items, you can bring many of the same item or you can bring just one item, whatever suits your fancy.

Want more info? Check out You Cooked What? I’ll Trade You Granola! in the New York Times.

Click here to RSVP now, attendance is limited to 20 people.

Following swap, there will be an optional potluck. Bring a dish if you want to stick around (dish doesn’t have to be the same thing you brought to swap).

Just some words of advice for canned or preserved item seekers. Be sure that you know the who and how regarding the canned foods. Improperly canned items can be deadly, and that is not an exaggeration. It may be a good idea for Wallyhood to have people outline their canning methods on a 3×5 card or some-such. We are looking forward to the event.

@Mimi, at our house, over by the John Stanford School. We’ll provide the address to those who RSVP prior to the event.

    @Aaron, noted!

OMG! What a fabulous idea. I’ll be volunteering at the Library Book Sale that day so will miss this one BUT will not miss this next time “we” do it. When can we do it again already?

Wallyhood needs you!

This community blog is all volunteer run, and we welcome articles from everyone in the Wallingford community. Something on your mind? Have a story to share? Please contact us at [email protected] today!
