Brouwers to Bottleworks to Wallingford

  • Post author:

Word on the street is that Matt Bonney, owner of Brouwer’s Cafe in Fremont and Bottleworks in Wallingford is the mystery buyer of Bandolero in Fremont and that the new establishment will be along the same lines as Bandolero (except, perhaps more beery and less tequila-y).

That’s all we know at the moment, not because anyone’s being mum, but because we’re not being the best reporter at the moment, day job obligations and all. If you know more, please share and save us some detective work!

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.

Matt Vandenberghe is the owner of Brouwer’s and Bottleworks, Matt Bonney is the GM… for clarification only, to the best of my knowledge.

Tangletown needs to serve food past 10pm! I welcome more beer in the hood. It would be stellar to have a swanky beer venue with good (not pub) food.

By chance, last week, when I was walking by closed Bandelero I met a person going in named Mathew and he explained he intended to open a new food service business there. He seemed very kindly. I hope he will get a permit for dancing. The Little Red Hen is perhaps the best dancing venue in the USA but Wallingford could handle a new floor.

As a Tangletown resident I was hoping for something other than a bar. Maybe a nice Teriaki take out place, Thai place or the return of a produce store. But given the track record of the bar’s in that location, this one will probably be gone in a year too. It’s been nice with the Bandelero closed. Parking is a little easier and the late night noise has gone down.
Guess in a way this is reflective of the change in Tangletown. From a neighborhood of families in houses to a neighborhood of singles in condo’s and apts.
