Mailman, Melman, Artist

  • Post author:

One of the things I love about Wallingford is how there’s a little bit of artist in all of us. Even, apparently, the mailman.

Nancy Merrill tipped me off that Mel Campos, the mailman for the 98105 chunk of Wallingford stretching from the water up to 45th Street around Thackeray* has been making kinetic sculpture out of objects he finds along his route and throughout his days.

Mel, a native of the Philippines, has been delivering mail in the 98105 for twenty years, and started making the little sculptures for his 1.5 yr old son. Each gets it’s own playful name, like Sonic Paperclip and Little Marley Chopper Head.

If you see him, ask him if he’s got one in his bag to show you.

* See, DOUG. et all, I finally learned how to spell the street name! Only took me 20 years of living here.

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.
