Welladay! Welladay!

I’m always amazed at the bits of uniqueness going on almost every week at the Good Shepherd Center. For example, this Saturday:

Nonsequitur’s Wayward Music Series is pleased to announce Welladay! Welladay! a collection of wayward love songs for the Chapel Performance Space happening on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at 8 PM.Performed in the historic Good Shepherd Center on the wooden stairs leading to the fourth-floor and inside the Chapel itself, Welladay! Welladay! sweeps through 36 James Joyce love poems. Singing children, soprano Betsy Baeskins, and a piano trio (violinist Tari Nelson-Zagar, cellist Lori Goldston, pianist Tiffany Lin) perform in this site-specific musical ceremony by composer Byron Au Yong. The music nods to the orphans and “wayward girls” who once lived in the building.

“I am inspired by the Good Shepherd Center – built in 1907 as an orphanage and home for unwed mothers and “at risk” girls – and James Joyce’s Chamber Music, published in 1907,” says composer Byron Au Yong. “The title, Welladay! Welladay! comes from poem 9 of 36. It is an archaic interjection. In a time of shootings and bombings, I think of love and find fragmented songs.”

Saturday, October 19, 2013 at 8:00 PM at the Chapel Performance Space at Good Shepherd Center, 4649 Sunnyside Ave. N, 4th floor. All ages, no alcohol, wheelchair access, on site parking. $5 – $15 sliding scale suggested donation at the door, cash/checks only. No advance tickets or reservations. More info at the Wayward Music Series web site.

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.
