Thurston’s – New Neighborhood Jazz Venue

Jordan Jordan March 26, 2014 1 Comment

(Rory Link sent in this review of Thurston’s Bistro & Lounge, the new restaurant at 6421 Latona Ave NE, where Mona’s used to be. Which reminds me: Ethan Stowell opened Mkt. in Tangletown, and I know I won’t be getting up there anytime soon. Who wants to write a review?)

photo 3Monday night, Matt McClosky plays soulful keyboards in this almost, dare I say it, classic jazz bar.  This young man already has a sure command of the jazz vernacular.  Black and red walls, charming modern retro lighting, beautiful young bartenders and waitresses and jazz most every night.

Did I mention food?  Modern American cuisine – the tacos on the tapas list are exquisite.  People rave about the bacon, shrimp infused hamburger.  I look forward to exploration. Thurston, son of Tony who is owner/chef at Kritika’s Thai Restaurant next door, has created a menu reflecting food from Asia, Europe, Mexico and the U. S.

Tuesday evenings feature Leif Totusek and Phil Sparks, two of Seattle’s best jazz players.  Leif brings more than a hint of African music (of which he is a master) and Phil plays the bass like the virtuoso he is.  This duo always brings something new and exciting to jazz standards.  The originals are outstanding.

photo 2Wonderful music.  Wonderful food. Wonderful service. Sunday evening features a jazz quintet, reputed to very good.  Children are allowed until 10:00 pm.  The open bar is oddly unobtrusive.

Named after Thurston Tsui, the restaurant has been open since September 2013. Thurston’s is creating an awesome addition to the community at 65th and Latona.  So close to Wallingford, this is a sweet spot for dinner and music.  Jazz starts at 6:00 pm on most nights and goes until 9:00 pm.  Saturday, Karaoke starts at 9:00 pm.

This corner is turning into “the” place to hear fine jazz.  Phil Sparks hosts jazz every Friday evening at the Latona Tavern from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.

The food is great here too.  Loyal jazz fans make the Latona a regular Friday event.  Tourists who happen in at either place are blown away by world class jazz they hear in these neighborhood venues.

My trio plays @ Thurston’s Mondays 9:30pm, starting in April. Nice to have such a fine jazz venue in the Greenlake area! I play trombone & sing with great cats, Michael Gotz, guitar & Michael Barnett, bass. Hope to see y’all!
