Hive Bio

Here’s a bit of interesting not far from our borders: what with all the DIYism going on these days, from homemade raspberry jams to Raspberry Pi’s to to 3D printers to Arduino drones, everyone’s getting in on the action. But what about the biologists?

They’ve got their own DIY lab, too, called HiveBio over near University Village:

The purpose of this community-run lab is to give the currently scattered individuals of the Seattle DIYbio community a central hub to meet and share ideas, as well as provide an accessible and affordable lab space for members to carry out the research and experiments that they would not have the opportunity to do elsewhere.

In addition to providing lab space to members, HiveBio produces workshops and classes for the general public for both kids and adults. Recent classes include the “science behind lotions” and a workshop entitled Candy Electrophoresis, on the chemistry of candy. Two upcoming classes are below:

Sarah Hayden of HiveBio says that current classes have students ages 16 – 65. Minors need an adult with them.

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.
