Summer Camps

Jordan Jordan June 1, 2014 2 Comments

Summer is approaching and with it, the end of school, and the beginning of the parents’ conundrum: what’s my kid going to do until September? Some ideas:

Dance Fremont (a Wallyhood sponsor) has several classes available:

Muballet / Pointe / Character Dance / Modern / Jazz Dance Camp ( 8 – 15 yrs)
$600 / one week; Beginner – 5 years dance training
June 23–27, Monday through Friday 9:00 AM–5:00 PM

Students will receive instruction in ballet, pointe (or pre-pointe), character dance, modern and jazz dance. This one week full day camp is appropriate for the young beginning through intermediate level student who wants to experience different forms of dance technique to the more experienced dance student who wants to continue dancing into the summer! The students will be divided into groups according to experience and/or age. Emphasis will be placed on body alignment, carriage, quality of movement & creativity, musicality and coordination.

Musical Theater / Costume Design and Production Camp ( 7 – 12 yrs)
$480 includes costume & two tickets to Performance
July 28– Aug. 1, Monday through Friday 9:00AM–5:00PM, performance on Friday August 1 at 5:00PM

Join Kathleen Mills (composer, lyricist and librettist of The Steadfast Tin Soldier, A Story Ballet) and Rebecca Schroeder (costume designer and dance specialist) in a fun-filled week of musical theater/costume design and production. All efforts culminate in a performance of Kathleen Mills’ Apple Tree, Boy…, a mini-musical adaptation of four fables by Aesop, at 5:00 PM on the last day of the camp.

Throughout the week, campers actively take part in all aspects of the production as well as vocal instruction, dance movement, theater-based activities and icebreakers. Supervised lunches, weather permitting, at a nearby part and a visit to Fusion Beads are also included in the week’s busy schedule. Bring a sack lunch, two snacks and a water bottle to camp each day.

Then Patty Makatura has something for the visual artist in your family:

Actually, many parents sort out summer camp schedules in the winter, because registrations often open then and many camps fill up quickly.

For parents looking for more camps in or near Wallingford, here are some others to check out: Tilth, zoo, Campfire at Woodland Park, UW, Meridian School, Neo Art School (Good Shepherd Center), Boys & Girls Club, Parks & Recs (through Green Lake Community Center), Steve & Kate’s at Bagley Elementary, YMCA. Some of these are very reasonable and others more pricey. There are also fabulous sailing camps on Lake Union, camps at the Pacific Science Center, the Aquarium…basically something for every interest. We live in a great city for summer camps!
