Meridian School Community Service Day

Kalifa Nkeiruka of the Meridian School in the Good Shepherd Center writes:

As stated in our mission, The Meridian School is dedicated to promoting commitment to community. As a community of active citizens, our students are committed to caring for others and their place.

Throughout the year Meridian students are involved in a variety of service learning projects and outreach efforts. On September 19th Meridian School held a Service Learning Day! 183 students and over 30 parent volunteers teamed up with their buddy classes to serve as stewards of the Good Shepherd Center, Meridian Park and our surrounding neighborhood.

They participated in many projects which included picking up rotten and fallen apples in Meridian Park and litter on Sunnyside Avenue, working with the Good Shepherd Center’s gardener to clean up the front gardens, weeding the courtyards and refilling the sandboxes in Meridian Park. It was a fun day filled with work and play for all–we look forward to our upcoming community needs project with Wellspring Family Services in November and our service learning week in May!

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.

The Meridian School K and 3rd graders did an amazing job picking up the fallen apples at Meridian Playground that day. In 45 minutes they cleaned up almost the entired orchard. Best clean up crew ever – the fruit trees thank you!
