Cometa Playschool

Cometa Playschool (a Wallyhood sponsor, at 4106 Stone Way N) is having open houses Saturday, January 24th 10am to noon and Saturday January 31st, 10am to 12.

Cometa Playschool, a local Spanish immersion preschool invites the Wallingford community to their open houses on Saturday, January 24th and 31st, 10am to 12pm. This is a great opportunity for parents interested in giving their children the advantage of learning a second language in their early years: tour the facility, meet their teachers and learn more about their program and philosophy.

Founder and Lead Teacher Manuela Slye has created a space for children to play, learn and discover the world while learning Spanish in a fun, stimulating way. Cometa Playschool applies the principles of the Reggio Emilia schools by providing their students with opportunities to learn through the project approach.

The instructors at Cometa Playschool believe learning a second language brings great benefits to childrens’ lives, including being more empathetic and understanding of people from different cultural and social backgrounds. Their students have participated in food and supply drives for local non profit organizations such as Northwest Harvest, Wellspring Family Services and Sister Schools.

Cometa Playschool is currently enrolling for their summer session and the 2015-2016 school year.

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.

My 3.5 year old son also attends Cometa. He has learned a lot of Spanish and has adjusted well to the gentle structure that comes with preschool. But more than anything he loves his teachers and playmates at school.

My family has had the pleasure of being a part of Cometa for the past 4 years. My daughter, who is now 6, attended preschool there for 3 years and my son attends currently. This program is unique for several reasons: first and foremost, Manuela (who is the owner) takes such obvious pride and responsibility in what she does. She is continously improving the program by attending conferences, utilizing resources and incorporating integrative education into the classroom. She is fully present daily by teaching, singing/ playing guitar, being aware of each child’s needs and involved with their families. I see her as an inspiring leader and I couldn’t be happier to expose my children to her character. Her teachers throughout the years have reflected this and carry the same qualities; they have all been outstanding. Additionally, I couldn’t be more amazed at how much spanish my kids have learned during their time there; it is truly amazing to see your little ones learn another culture and language. They have taught me so much and we speak spanish often at home. My daughter now attends a spanish immersion grade school and I have such comfort in knowing she has a strong base. Finally, Cometa teachers are personable, caring, nurturing and fun adults. They have, over the years, kept an eye out for my family as we transitioned in and out of nannies. I couldn’t be more thankful and appreciative for their presence!
