The Party in Wallingford is Just Getting Started

  • Post author:

Wallingford was crazy today with opening day and the pretty weather and free comics and the plant sale, and apparently the party’s just getting started. Brady offered us this hot tip:

I was driving by the Puffin Glass space today (321 NE 45th) and saw people in there working. I stopped in to ask them what was up. They are working on the tenant improvements and will be ready to open in 2 weeks. They aren’t associated with Puffin Glass, but will be opening a 502 shop (Recreational weed).

So in addition to a restaurant critic, I think Wallyhood is going to need a pot critic. Beyond that, the weather is too nice for hard hitting investigative journalism or grumpy opinion pieces, so for today here’s a couple pics from Saturday:

Free Comic Book Day! I would pay to see this group in the next Avengers film

Our chicks are now one month old and half downy and half feathery- Saturday was their first day outside!

I've lived here since 1998. I spent 13 years at Microsoft as a developer and manager, concurrent with Ballmer's reign. I quit after seeing my third consecutive project cancelled, while my parents needed help, and my wife was getting stressed working at Seattle Public Schools. Since then, I have helped family and community while taking on side projects and volunteer work. I led the renovation of Meridian Playground, helped moderate the South Transfer Station design, helped advance the Green Lake Way road diet, and have guided several transportation and parks projects through neighborhood involvement. I wrote for Wallyhood for a while and was president of the Wallingford Community Council during the great recession, where thankfully, land use was not an issue. I'm an impatient moderate vegetarian who believes in practical win-win solutions.

“Stores may not be within 1000 feet of any elementary or secondary school, playground, recreation center or facility, child care center, public park, public transit center, library, or arcade.”

I guess comic book stores are ok.

Luckily, the distance between the school (4057 5th Ave NE) and this new 502 retail shop (321 NE 45th) is 1584 feet! Smoke up, Wallingford!!

I measured 1369 feet to JSIS and 2,500 feet to McDonald. I don’t see any issues with this location regarding distance to a school.

Not sure how you are getting those measurements. Regulations specify that the measurement is to be a straightline from closest points of two properties . But even if accurate, and thus the location falls technically outside the 1,000 foot circle, still does not strike me as a favorable location given its proximity to JIS.

I used Google Earth Pro. Lot line to lot line is 1,275 feet.

I wonder which streets will feel the biggest parking impact.
