Seattle Night Out is Tuesday

NightOut_LogoReminder: Streets will be blocked off all over the neighborhood tomorrow night for the 31st Annual Seattle Night Out.

In reading the description from the official web site, I was a little surprised to see it billed primarily as an anti-crime event, goals declaring like “Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness” and “Send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back”.

In my experience, it’s 99% about community building. Folks pull lawn chairs into the street, pile dishes onto the potluck table and just find out who lives nearby in casual conversation. I get that community-building is a cornerstone to crime prevention, but for many of us, community-building is the goal. That is prevents crime is icing on the cake.

Anyway, whatever the reason, I encourage you to attend your nearest block party tomorrow night. If you’re block isn’t having one, try one street over. You may be delighted at who you discover.

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.

That disconnect has always been there for years. The city always says it’s about crime, and it’s generally just a block party.

It’s good information to share, but it’s also kind of awkward, like you’re campaigning 🙂 Must find a way to get over it!

And while you are in the street, water your street trees! 2-3 five gallon buckets of water a tree could save its life.

Good idea. Block parties are fun, and this block party is a nationwide event. It is an opportunity to organize, meet neighbors etc. It also is a low hassle block party. Simple to register, no fees, no lighted barricades to put up take down, deliver. A good deal for all.

So I stopped by our local Stone and 40th Pagliacci to order a couple of big pizzas for our 38th and Woodlawn Block party today and when it came time to pay up, the owner said “It’s on me! – Have a great time at your Block Party!”. Wow. Thanks so much for your generous contribution! And neighbors, come on over to 38th and Woodlawn between 5 and 9 today. We have a wonderful group of neighbors.

You might get a few people coming over from adjacent blocks to the SW, but don’t be fooled by their sad faces, they’re going to have an excellent block party to go to, at a later date. Keep them away from the wine, or don’t say I didn’t warn you!

That is so great…re the pizza! I love Wallingford.

I am bringing (to the Bagley party–green chili casserole, baked beans, and slice cantaloupe.
There will be two more people doing with me, a mom and a 2 year old
