Donate Bikes in Wallingford, Free Parenting Class at Familyworks

BikeWorks is hosting what may become a bi-annual bike drive this Sunday, September 20 from 11-2.  There are multiple locations throughout the city, including one at my house right here in Wallingford. These bikes are used to teach disadvantaged kids bike repair, bicycling skills, work and business, recycling, leadership, and much more.  Our signature program teaches the kids how to strip and rebuild a bike, and then after a set number of community service hours they “earn” their own bike.  We also have camps, our own bike shop (we sell used bikes with the help of youth apprentices), programs just for girls, and much more.

The whole operation is dependent on used bikes and bike parts, so bring whatever you have on down and say “hi”!  We especially need youth and women’s sized bikes.  Hope to see you!

Hi Ed!

Also on the calendar, FamilyWorks is offering a free parenting class for parents of toddlers and preschoolers. The class is on six Wednesdays from Sept. 23-Oct 28 from 6:30-8;30 pm:

Come and join facilitator Julietta Skoog for this free six week class for parents/caregivers of children aged 18 months-5 years old.  Learn to discipline with firmness and kindness, have fun as a parent, and set the foundation for important social and life skills.  Help your child feel a sense of belonging and significance through mutual respect and encouragement. Based on Jane Nelson’s Positive Discipline book, available for $10 with scholarships available.

Call (206) 694-6727 to register for the class and for childcare. Registration is required. Located at 1501 N. 45th St.  Seattle, WA  98103.

I've lived here since 1998. I spent 13 years at Microsoft as a developer and manager, concurrent with Ballmer's reign. I quit after seeing my third consecutive project cancelled, while my parents needed help, and my wife was getting stressed working at Seattle Public Schools. Since then, I have helped family and community while taking on side projects and volunteer work. I led the renovation of Meridian Playground, helped moderate the South Transfer Station design, helped advance the Green Lake Way road diet, and have guided several transportation and parks projects through neighborhood involvement. I wrote for Wallyhood for a while and was president of the Wallingford Community Council during the great recession, where thankfully, land use was not an issue. I'm an impatient moderate vegetarian who believes in practical win-win solutions.

I think I know of two children’s bikes. Will let you know or just drop them off.

If you are still taking bikes we have a blue kids bike available. Where should we drop it off?

I dropped off two bikes last weekend. I think that address is in the comments under the article. I did not check before I wrote this. But I remember finding it in Wallyhood,

It was September 20, which has passed and gone. Bikeworks will take them if you bring them down to their place in Columbia CIty, 3709 S Ferdinand, after noon. Or you can drop them off at a transfer station.
