Weirdo Simpatico

image001We don’t get enough author readings in Wallingford. Or at least not enough that I hear about. And certainly not enough with musical accompaniment.

How about at a bar, where you can order a drink? Enough of those?

No, not enough.

So great, here we go: this Friday, May 13th Katy Bourne will be reading from Weirdo Simpatico, Little Stories for Short Attention Spans at the Seamonster Lounge (2202 N. 45th St) from 5 – 5:30 pm. Bassist Paul Gabrielson will improvise a live “soundtrack” as Bourne shares her very-short stories celebrating the weirdo in us all.

Says her press release:

Each of Katy Bourne’s one-bite narratives presents a snippet of a larger conundrum of human nature. “I like to think of the stories as tiny pokes that give the reader a mental double-take,” says Bourne. “We all have our quirkier tendencies and unique ways of being in the world. I see Weirdo Simpatico as a microcosm of those tendencies.”

The fifty stories in Weirdo are freakishly representative of the kinds of things that are running through Bourne’s mind at any time. “My brain is a perpetual circus of inane drivel and ridiculous speculation. I make up stories about people I see around me all the time.”

The reading is free, but while you’re there, you may want to grab some food or drink. Seamonster has a decent bar menu now, featuring some luxe burger options plus a Mexican menu (better than Trump Grill’s Taco Bowl, believe me).

When Katy isn’t writing her short snippets of strange fiction, she’s the volunteer coordinator at Northwest Harvest Food Bank or singing  jazz.

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.
