Car Dent Scam

Jordan Jordan August 10, 2016 14 Comments

5477384485_ace9977464_bJosh posted this on the Wallingford/Fremont Facebook page today:

Yesterday evening a guy and his accomplice pulled up in a truck next to my car on Latona and 45th. He said “Nice car man, you take good care of your car it looks like. You want me to roll out that big dent in your door? I just did 3 Priuses today.”

I was like, what dent? “You got a big dent right there.” he said. He had a nice clean shiny truck and he told me to pull over into the gas station.

I pulled into the gas station and the guy parked next to me and they jumped out fast. One guy came over to my open window and the other one over to the supposed dent. As I got out, one guy tried to distract me as the other guy put his foot into my fender. Then they tried to charge me to fix the dent. I wasn’t fooled. Then the guy used a suction cup thing and pulled the dent out a bit.

I called the police. They spun out of there in their truck with no license plates. All of this was caught on the Shell cameras.

The employees of the Shell station says they have already called the cops on this guy several times for harassing customers.

(Photo by Jack Two, purely for illustration, and probably more severe than the dent described in the story)

I declined their offer as we rounded a traffic island behind QFC and the guy said some unkind things. A similar scam in West Seattle where the pitch is “Your tire is flat”.

Another example of illegal immigrants taking jobs away. Our grandson studied three years to be a car denter and can’t find work.

you don’t know that fact one way or the other. I hope your grandson finds a job, I’ll look around, too.

You have absolutely no reason to make that statement, Densmore Dave.

The biggest scam is paying taxes for a non-existent police force. Shell employees have called them many times and yet these people are still carry on doing it.
I am so tired with our inept police force. They do not respond, and this neighborhood, like all others, needs local police integration into our community.
It seems as though the SPD has found a way to reduce crime rates by not investigating crimes, and not acknowledging that these crimes are taking place. It is like we have ostriches with their heads in the sand, and elsewhere for that matter.

Spot on. Put bars on your doors and windows and enjoy the paradise of Seattle!

Another unfortunate aspect of this is that real Romany gypsies have traditionally operated in more or less the same way, they’ll show up in a parking lot or in a car next to you on the road and propose to fix a dent that’s really there. Though it’s a bit shady, it’s essentially honest work that they have the skill and tools to do after a fashion. So – maybe it’s a scam, maybe it’s really free enterprise. Get a name, is he George? (Honestly I don’t know if they still bother with this, or if plastic car bodies have more or less obsoleted that trade.)

Walter if you mean the statue at the church, I believe the artist reclaimed the piece from extended loan.
