Swastika Painted at Wallingford Avenue Home

Jack Jack February 27, 2017 20 Comments

The event described below occurred sometime on Wednesday, February 22 or perhaps the evening of the 21st. If you know of similar events in the neighborhood occurring around that time, please let us know in the comments.

Kat wrote:

We live on Wallingford Ave N [in southern Wallingford]. This swastika was painted on the progressive, inclusive yard sign outside our house this morning. Someone took the time to get supplies and do this (I might think otherwise if it were sharpie).

The paint was still wet. I washed it off.

I have no idea if other signs in the neighborhood have been similarly vandalized.

I followed up with Kat to ask if she felt that her family was targetted, and she thought that was not likely to be the case. But one never really knows. She adds:

We do have a toddler, so I am of course nervous that someone of ill intent will take some sort of vindictive action since I cleaned off the graffiti, but I also think that’s unlikely.

Given the lack of distinct skill and the rather awkward mauve-colored, tempera-looking paint, I think it wouldn’t be unreasonable to assume that it might just be neighborhood kids being jackasses. But we are also on a major bus line, so it might be a really troubled individual. Who knows.

It’s always important to report any incidents of crime, even if you don’t actually get a visit from an officer, because these statistics are used to focus law enforcement efforts. It’s a “squeaky wheel gets the oil” type of system. Kat did report this incident using SPD’s online form, and she took the additional steps of reporting them to the Southern Poverty Law Center and Anti-Defamation League again using online forms. It’s not a lot of effort, but it could have a lot of effect.

It’s probably unrelated, but on the evening of February 22, I found (and removed) a neo-Nazi sticker pasted on the bumper of a Car2Go I picked up in Ravenna.

You can also get a similar sign locally made and benefiting 9 local nonprofits at Cafe Javasiti, Little Lago or Volunteer Park Cafe or online at http://www.spreadlove2017.com

I’ve been seeing a lot of these signs popping up after the election but for every 30 I see I saw one Clinton sign up before the election. I’m not trolling, just trying to get inside the mind of my fellow liberals. If you don’t support the platform that most aligns with the blm signs then you can’t possibly be surprised we are where we are now. Campaign signs BEFORE elections actually matter and my fellow liberals were apparently too chickenshit to take a stand then.

Given that Clinton won Washington by a huge landslide, as did all but one statewide Democrat and we had elections for open seats in Congress and the Legislature, both of which were between two Democrats, why would you consider that not putting up Clinton signs before the election is indicative of anything but a desire to concentrate on other issues that were important locally (ST3 and other ballot issues as well)? Do you think more yard signs in Wallingford for Hillary would have changed any votes in Wisconsin, Michigan or Pennsylvania?

What an ugly comment to make.

I know, it is sad that such people exist so close to Seattle. That part of the Puget Sound is notorious. Sad, but true.

What a sad lonely person you must be. Sending a little love in your direction, hoping you become a little better informed about people

You must be from Snohomish County. I am very imformed, not sad, but realistic. Need to get back to work. Not retired with time on my hands.

Apparently you have plenty of time on your hands to spread divisiveness and bigotry, the opposite of what Wallingford has long aspired to be. Happily working on my computer.

Plus, the employment statement is such a troll statement. 98105, love to you! As you clearly need it.

I have property in Snohomish County
It is so pathetic that I can not sell it, even in this market. I only have bigotry against poor white trash. ..the same people who elected Donald Trump. You should go up there and see the Confederate flags. You obviously come from there if you care so much. The place is hideous. Do you come from there. You probably escaped and have trauma, so you experience reaction formation. Look it up.

It’s a large varied geographic area. Most of unincorporated SnoCo population is in the more dense area that is pretty solid blue. Working too hard with long commutes. I have relatives who bought their right at the height of the big bubble and have just recently been able to look at selling.

Unfortunately two years ago, the work I do required me to become very familiar with the white supremacists and militias. They are out in the back rural areas and hwy 2 has had a lot of math problems. But I’ve been around the DIstrict a long time, I’m pretty sure this would be a lot mire local. (The Confederate Flags totally creep me out)

It looks like similar graffiti was found in Ballard as well.

More likely these are false flag acts.

Right, just like the neo-nazi stickers and posters in the U District. Really?

“More likely”? Really? There is no indication of these being false flag acts. What there is is an anti-Semitic white nationalist sitting in the West Wing, advising the President. Racists are emboldened. Trump is to blame.
