Lights Out

  • Post author:

At about 8:15 PM, we heard a huge boom followed by several flashes (isn’t it supposed to be the other way around?) here in east Wallingford near the John Stanford School, at which point the lights went out. Latona Ave between 42nd and 45th has been blocked off by the fire department. The fireman there says a main power line is down at 43rd and Latona, and they’re waiting for City Light to come fix it.

From the map on City Light’s status page, it looks like the power is out for most of Wallingford into Green Lake. City Light estimates power should be back by 3 am.

Am I the only one who always thinks “terrorist attack?” the moment something like this happens?

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.

Good reminder to know where flashlights, batteries are located. And to removed the corroded ones from rarely used flashlights!
Oops. Guys this is about cake. Well, the power is back on now.

I live near the midpoint of this red zone- had power all night and still this morning. I hope more wake up to read this and think” I had power’ than those who read this long later after an interrupted night w/ no power.

These days I think North Korea. Seriously.

    From komonews.com:

The cause of the outage was found to be a pole fire at North 43rd Street and Latona Avenue East caused by dust that accumulated in the power line insulator during the dry summer. Once rain hits the dust, it can cause it to become conductive, move past the wires and catch fire.

Chicken or egg? Did the pole fire cause the substation to blow, or did the substation surge cause the pole fire?

      1. Donn

First I’ve heard about the substation. Do the lines normally withstand surges of that magnitude? Can the substation normally be expected to blow if a line goes down?

    I always think Peter Wolf.
