Introducing Historic Wallingford

  • Post author:

I have just learned of an exciting new Wallingford organization, Historic Wallingford.

A group of very enthusiastic Wallingford residents have developed this organization, had it incorporated as a non-profit entity in May 2017 and will orchestrate its official launch in January.

Why Historic Wallingford? In years past, local architects and historians led walks and tours in Wallingford to highlight our unusual concentration of architecturally significant buildings. Seeking to expand upon this, it was suggested after discussions with several noted Seattle historians, that a formal organization could best expand and carry the work forward – hence Historic Wallingford.

The group plans to raise awareness of the History of Wallingford by learning about the people, homes, commercial buildings, institutions and events that have all contributed to making Wallingford what it is today – a place we are proud of and call home. Call it civic pride, Some of the events will be a lecture series, a craftsman bungalow fair, an ambassador program and walking tours. The group is working with the support of Historic Seattle and the Wallingford Community Council. Tableau Software has awarded Historic Wallingford with a generous grant to help fund their programs for which they are very grateful.

Historic Wallingford has a solid group of people forming the decision making board. Paul Dorpat and Tom Veith, well known Seattle historians; Carl Slater and Mike Ruby longtime community activists; Kim England, UW professor of Urban Geography; Matt Hallett IT specialist; Rhonda Bush (president) and Sharon V. Scherer, longtime Wallingford residents, Pam Singer a recent east coast transplant and Sarah J. Martin, Architectural Historian, complete the board.

President Rhonda Bush: “We are excited to tell you about our new organization. We want you to join and be part of our emerging group and share the journey of discovering Wallingford. Many interesting and fun volunteer opportunities await in the near future. We welcome your thoughts, energy and passion for our neighborhood. Lets celebrate Historic Wallingford!”
