Wallingford Nickelsville Update

Future home of Nickelsville Homeless Encampment

I spoke to someone from the city at Tuesday’s city-wide open house on MHA at Hamilton Middle School on Tuesday night about Nickelsville, which was originally scheduled to move to Wallingford in November.

I was told that the move has been delayed while Seattle City Light, the property owner, worked through some issues, but they turned off the gas on the property earlier this week and plan to begin demolition of the existing structure in anticipation of Nickelsville’s move tomorrow, Friday, February 2nd. She told me that Nickelsville residents are raring and ready to move, including the tiny houses, and the move should be complete by the end of February.

Now you know what I know.

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.

Just a positive note to say that I was thrilled with the news that we could be expecting this camp to open soon and am looking forward to the variety of people and interesting interactions that it will bring.

I took a screen shot of this and will be back in a year.

Marie, come see me on Feb 2, 2019. You can catch the streetcar from Market St. You will be amazed by the changes along 45th. I’ll still be in the little house on a quite street with the big tree out front. Oh, don’t forget your screen shot and bring something for the nice people who live in the camp.

Better yet, we should take some photos of the surrounding blocks now. And then a year from now, we’ll see if George Scarola has actually kept the city’s promise to not allow illegal encampments to sprout nearby. And if the city doesn’t live up to it’s commitment to Wallingford, before and after crime reports might be helpful as well.

Seriously, do it. Post them here for all of us.

          1. hayduke

            I just might do that.

Please do it now. Before photos.

Take photos of the 4 tents on the west side of Stone Way N & 42nd today also.

4 tents? I just drove by there and only saw one or two.

I’ll try to take photos of the area around the tiny houses in the next day or so. Then I’ll post them here, so we have a record. Not that I’m under any illusion the city will actually give a rip if illegal encampments get established nearby, or that they won’t renew the lease a year from. But at least we can call them out on their lies.

Print the pictures. Have witnesses sign and date them in the presence of a notary public. Then store them in a lock box at Key Bank.

The village is located right by where your precious streetcar will run on the BG trail, you want some notarized photos of that area too?

          7. KatCat7

The streetcar will be on 45th. The streetcar on the BGT was TJ’s idea, although I did like it. Do take a few pictures of a good spot to put in a water taxi dock. And have some fried clams at Iver’s.

          8. hayduke

Why not a streetcar on both spots? I’m also thinking a hotair balloon launching pad on top of Kite Hill, thoughts?

No, I’m getting a helicopter– in midst of car buying— might not get a car –OMG it is probably how the City is reducing car usage by having car sales people lie, yell, shame, lose calls etc etc.. Novel!

Yesterday going N on Stone Way N & turned left onto 42nd saw 2 across from closed store & 1 on Stone Way N.. A dark orange/brown van was near the tents also– check nextdoor.com- the van may be the one described in a recent alert re a guy who swerves & yells at people. I did not slow down much because I choose to not attract attention.
