Say “Hola!” to New Ethan Stowell Restaurant Coming to Stone Way

  • Post author:

Lovers of the Ethan Stowell restaurant empire will welcome a new eatery opening some time this spring on Stone Way. While I would love to say that we got the scoop on this first, the Seattle Met got the jump on us, and they have the story here.

The new Stowell place, called Super Bueno, will be located at 3627 Stone Way — just a few doors up from Manolin. The cuisine will be … what else? Mexican. If you’ve been to Frelard Pizza, another Stowell space, and have taken advantage of the kids’ play area to gain a bit of a break from the little ones while you eat, you’ll be happy to know that Super Bueno will also feature a play area on the second of the two levels. (The downstairs will have more of an adult vibe, but not to the complete exclusion of children.)

Wallingford is currently home to one other Stowell restaurant, Mkt., in the Tangletown area. If you haven’t been, it’s worth a visit. I’ve been once, and I remember the food being good. What I remember most of all, however, was the very cramped quarters. (The Mkt. website refers to the space as “intimate.”) I got a seat at the window which is, perhaps, the tightest area, and I recalled a trip Dad took us kids on once to tour a World War II submarine. Sailors never ate so good, though!

Mexican food of, by and for white corporate geeks. Cultural appropriation at its finest!

“We’ll have to make cuts. The budget—we’ve run our numbers, and we would be in a negative budget. But we’ll figure out how to make that work. I think that a lot of businesses will. But what I think that a lot of businesses won’t do is what we also won’t be doing, and that’s expanding.

I guess the Stowell’s fears of paying a living wage were overblown.

He’s closed a couple recently. This is a wash.

No tears here. If there’s something the Seattle restaurant needs, it isn’t expansion of corporate chains, attached to big name local chefs or not.

I am looking forward to it. Hopefully the prices will be moderate rather than high level luxury.
