FamilyWorks’ 2019 Family Holiday Program

Happy Thanksgiving. I hope you’re safe, warm, well-fed and spending time with friends or family.

FamilyWorks is running another Family Holiday Program this year, collecting gifts for families in need.

Kirby Lochner from FamilyWorks writes that they’re doing it a little bit differently this year. Instead of focusing on stuffthey’re asking people to donate experiences, which sounds just about right to me.

The program will run slightly different than last year, as we are no longer matching donors with participant wishlists. Instead, we heard from many of our participants that the holiday season is especially important to them because it’s a time to come together as a family and build community. For this reason, we’re focusing on items that can provide meaningful holiday experiences for our families. Here’s a link to the donation page, which has more information about the types of experiences our participants have requested.

The donation page lists some ideas for gifts, including aquarium and zoo visits, AMC and Regal movie theater tickets, and holiday dinners at local restaurants. There’s also more traditional ideas on the list, like warm clothing and groceries.

They ask that gift cards be donated in denominations of $25 or $50, and you can drop them off, mail them in, or donate directly through the 2019 Family Holiday Program website by December 9th.

I started Wallyhood back in 2008, right when my son was born, because I realized I had lived in the neighborhood since 1993 and didn't really know my neighbors. I figured writing a blog about what was going on around me would be a good way to meet people and help other people do the same. As the years progressed, those neighbors have picked up the torch and it is now a group effort, which I adore. I moved out of Wallingford for a few years (2020 - 2025), but I'm back, now living with my wife, son and dog (Dillinger) up in Tangletown.
