Wise Owl Books & Music Lands in Tangletown

Adam January 2, 2022 1 Comment

Bookworms rejoice! A new independent bookstore, Wise Owl Books & Music (2223 N 56th St.), landed in the nook between Restaurant Christine (formerly Himalayan Sherpa House) and Leny’s Place in Tangletown.

I’m a huge book nerd and was absolutely thrilled to discover a new bookstore in the neighborhood. There are some great bookstores in Fremont, Phinney Ridge, and the University District, but nothing for the booklover anywhere in between I-5 and 99. This is especially true after poetry-specific Open Books recently announced they are moving to Pioneer Square.

Wise Owl has an assortment of both new and used books and vinyl records. They strive to offer books and music from diverse and underrepresented perspectives to the community. They aren’t currently accepting your used books, but this could change in the future. The current collection is relatively small but very thoughtful and well curated. Like me, I think you’ll find little treasures everywhere.

Christina Gilbreath started Wise Owl as an online-only shop a few years ago (hence the great website) and then expanded to popup book sales at various coffee shops and markets. This new shop is the first physical retail location. Online sales and digital content will remain a major focus. As one example, Wise Owl partners with Libro.fm (a Social Purpose Corporation) that lets you shop local while buying audiobooks.

Christina has a lot of ideas for the new shop. In addition to growing the regular inventory, she hopes to expand music and musician biography offerings, showcase original artwork, and host author speaking/signing events.

Next time you’re in Tangletown, stop by to say hello and perhaps you’ll discover your next great read.

i met christina at one of her pop-up shops at Pilgrim Coffeehouse (great coffee by the way) and she is so helpful and kind! so lovely to chat with. she helped me pick out a book that was up my alley and i loved reading it! “The Firekeeper’s Daughter” is what it is called–highly recommend! i’m so excited to check out wise owl, very happy she has a permanent storefront now 🙂
