The return of the Great Wallingford Wurst Festival

Julie Martin Julie Martin September 7, 2022 Comments are off

After a two-year hiatus, we are thrilled to inform you that the Great Wallingford Wurst Festival is returning to the neighborhood September 16 and 17th! The 37th annual event hosted by the St. Benedict School is a chance for kids and adults to have fun, get to know neighbors and raise funds for the school.

The festival includes live music from 16 local musical acts and bands, great food and beverages, bouncy houses, a “Fun Zone” filled with games and prizes for kids, a variety of crafts and vendors, a sweet shop, and an outdoor beer garden (21+ only).

I’ll date myself here and tell you that when I was a kid Wurst fest included actual fair rides. The kind that didn’t always appear very safe. There was also a woman titled the “Rainbow lady” who wore outlandish rainbow clothes and entertained kids. Her most wonderful feature was the pair of braids that stuck directly out of the sides of her head. Like magic! My friend Katy and I were desperate to know how she did it. We begged her to tell us. “It’s easy,” she said, “Sauerkraut juice.” We dutifully headed down to the Food Giant, purchased a can of sauerkraut and headed to my house to make braids stick out of the sides of our heads. When my mother returned home, she could smell us from the front door. And alas, no braids!
