Colorectal Cancer Alliance Hosts Walk Event in Seattle to Drive Screening Awareness

I would like to alert the Wallingford community, especially those living near Gas Works Park of another upcoming event which could affect traffic and noise levels in the area.

Information I have been able to obtain is presented below.

The 2024 Seattle Walk to End Colon Cancer will take place at 9am on Saturday, October 5th at Gas Works Park, 201 N Northlake Way, Seattle 98103. Marking its third-year walking loud in Seattle, the 3-mile walk is a free, family-friendly event open to everyone in the community – colorectal cancer survivors and allies who wish to stop the silence, reject the stigma, and bring an end to this disease. To register visit colorectalcancer.org/seattlewalk.

Parking

Carpooling encouraged to make parking easier and the environment happier! Free 4-hour parking is available in Gas Works Park parking lot. Free (back-in angle) street parking on N. Northlake Way directly across street from Gas Works Park and continuing northeast toward I-5 and the University of Washington.

The Seattle Seahawks’ Blue Thunder drumline will lead the event’s signature Moment of UNsilence to start the walk. DJ Mike Steve and emcee BB Santiful aka Btwotimes will keep things loud and spirited throughout the morning. The Blowout Brass Band will welcome walkers as they return to Gas Works Park. Event sponsors and community partners will be onsite sharing resources, information and giveaways. Village Perk and Vandalz food trucks will offer breakfast treats for purchase.

Honored guests and speakers will include local cancer survivors and walk organizers Brianna Mercker and Natalie Phelps, Dr. Melinda Hawkins from Providence Swedish, Dr. Stacey Cohen from Fred Hutch Cancer Center, and Nayab Hussain, a young-onset colorectal cancer survivor.

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths for men and women combined, and cases are rising in people under age 50. It’s estimated to be the deadliest cancer among 20-49 year olds by 2030. Despite being more fatal than most cancers, this disease is less known among the public and less funded in research institutions. The leading nonprofit organization dedicated to colorectal cancer, the Colorectal Cancer Alliance (Alliance), is in a race against time to change that. To help end this disease, the Alliance is encouraging allies to rally together at its local fundraising and awareness event, the Seattle Walk to End Colon Cancer.
