Tweedy and Popp will be acknowledged as a Legacy Business in Wallingford at the Wally-Home Resource Fair

If you are interested in reading about Wallingford history, check out A Preliminary Sketch of Wallingford’s History 1855-1984, written by historian Thomas Veith as part of a Wallingford Heritage Project. You can find his writing here. He presents an array of interesting tidbits on the development of our neighborhood, and his writing offers perspective as to the age and social context of some older buildings on N 45th Street.

On page 66 of his writings, Mr. Veith mentions Tweedy and Popp Hardware:

“2100 Block (Between Meridian and Bagley) Philip W. Tweedy and Louis W. Popp opened their hardware store at 2108 N. 45th Street (now the Moon Temple Restaurant) in 1920 or 1921. In May 1936, the Tweedy & Popp operation was still located at 2108 N. 45th Street where, to drum up some Depression era business, the shop ran a promotional program with Fuller Paint Company, offering to give away an unfinished tea table with the purchase of $2.50 of Fuller paints. Tweedy & Popp replaced Ernst Hardware at 1916 N. 45th Street in 1956 or 1957 and has continued to operate at that location for the last 47 or 48 years.”

Tweedy and Popp made an additional move in 2009 with the help of a hundred volunteers forming a “bucket brigade” to move inventory across the street, leaving the words ACE behind in the tile entry. Their current location is the NE corner of the Wallingford Center, a landmarked building at 1815 N. 45th Street. The staff at Tweedy and Popp Hardware continues to serve the Wallingford community and has expanded from its Wallingford roots to a local chain of five hardware stores.

At the Wally-Home Resource Fair on May 31st, Historic Wallingford will honor Tweedy and Popp Hardware with a Legacy Business Award for providing service to Wallingford since 1920. A framed watercolor sketch by artist Melinda Hannah will be presented to Tweedy and Popp at noon in the Wallingford Center at the top of the stairs from the parking lot on the east side of the building.

You are all invited to participate in the Wally-Home Resource Fair on Saturday, May 31st from 10 am-3 pm at the Wallingford Center, which is free to the public.
